Pine Box
Jan 11th, 2018 at 10:14am

Family devastated after grandmother's top-of-the-range coffin swapped for pine box

"Police are investigating after a grandmother's $1,700 oak coffin was switched to a pine box for cremation, after a funeral service in central Queensland."

Police investigating?  What the ... ?

This is common practice.

The expensive coffin (in most cases) is only used for viewing the body.

When the body goes to the oven, it's placed in a cheap pine or cardboard box and the good coffin goes back into stock (after a quick spray with Mr Sheen).

At the very least, all coffins are stripped of their brass handles before going into the oven/bone crusher.

Naughty.

However, why spend money on a thing that will be incinerated?

Exactly.

And why would anyone care about it?

Better to reuse the coffin, than waste something someone has spent hours making.

I thought everyone knew that the bodies were put into cheaper boxes for the cremation.

The expensive one is purely for show.

If the family paid for it , isn't their right to burn it if they wish? That's theft.

Yes it is.

So why was it swapped?

Sure, they can do anything they want with it.

My point is, I thought it was common knowledge that the bodies are put into cardboard or pine boxes for the oven/bone crusher.

So the funeral director can sell it again to someone else.

Obviously the funeral home didn't tell them. Most people don't know how the death industry works because nobody really wants to know how the death industry works. It's a little deceptive on the part of the funeral home.

Just half burn them and chuck them in the Ganges.

Could be.

There's probably a clause in the funeral contract somewhere (in very small print) that says the expensive coffin is only on hire (for the viewing) and that a cheaper box is used for the cremation.

I suppose the police will find out, if they investigate.

If it does turn out to be theft, the police are going to be pretty busy as this practice is widespread across the industry.

There was a funeral company in the states who got busted dumping half burnt bodies in bushland. They'd showed a picture of the dumping site and there were bones everywhere. The most disturbing thing for me were all the metal hips . Old people deserve the dignity of being sent off properly. What's the world coming to?

Yeah, it's a bit rough when funeral directors rip people off.

It's not like their business is ever going to slow down.

But, I suspect the expensive coffins are only on hire (in the case of cremations).

They don't tell this to the family, though.

$1,700.00 just to hire the thing for a couple of hours?
