A dog's breakfast': Anthony Albanese slams NBN after roll out delays

Canberra Times
January 4 2018

Residents in Sydney's inner west and south have been urged to sign a petition calling on the government to “fix the mess” of the national broadband network after delays left locals without a date they could expect to switch.   Sad

Anthony Albanese, the federal member for the Grayndler electorate, launched the online petition on January 2, urging the government to “give us our NBN” and slamming the delays.

Within two days, 650 people had signed the petition. Of those, 53 per cent said they did not have the NBN but wanted the service.

Another 21.3 per cent had the NBN but were unhappy with it, and 2.6 per cent had the NBN and were happy with it.

“It’s a dog’s breakfast,” Mr Albanese said.   Sad

There are about 55,890 homes and businesses in Grayndler and the latest figures showed 2878 were connected to the NBN, he said, adding Australians had initially been promised the NBN by 2016.

The main suburbs in this electorate include those around Annandale, Balmain, Birchgrove, Enmore, Haberfield, Rozelle, Stanmore and St Peters. It also includes parts of Marrickville and Newtown.

Premises in this area are largely expecting to connect through existing pay TV cables, known as hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) connections. They now face an additional six to nine month wait after the NBN said in November it would delay its HFC rollout due to higher levels of customer complaints.

An online search using addresses within this footprint on the NBN Co’s connection tool usually has the response “we’re currently getting the NBN broadband access network up and running in your area” and encourages residents to check back in February.

“HFC is the predominant rollout method in Grayndler. It is unclear when these issues will be resolved,” Mr Albanese said.

Acting communications minister Simon Birmingham said 3 million households and businesses had been connected to the NBN since 2013.

“In the electorate of Grayndler, no homes were ever connected to the NBN under the former Labor government,” Mr Birmingham said.

“Today, more than 30,000 homes are ready to connect in Grayndler and thousands more have construction underway in their neighbourhoods.”

It's understood that prior to the HFC pause, construction was under way or completed for 70 per cent of homes and businesses within the electorate.

The NBN Co did not provide comment, but has repeatedly said that despite the delays, it is on track to deliver completion by 2020.

In December, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull agreed he'd said everyone would have access to 25 megabits by 2016 but when they “did the audit on the NBN shortly after coming into government in 2013, it was perfectly plain that that objective could not be realised”   Sad

That's what happens when voters let an incompetent Labor Minister come up with an idea on the back of a napkin and the fool implements it without industry consultation and no CBA. Labor has really screwed this up from the outset. This government is merely ttying to make the most of appalling decision making by Conroy.

Funny I know several people with FTTH & they love the NBN (country people because they were the one to receive the NBN first, you know how you bang on about farmers etc)
It's only people like me(THE MAJORITY) that received Mals FTTN that have sh1t NBN.
Liberals have been in charge of this mess for 4 going on 5 years now at what point do the chickens come home to roost?

And Lefties don't deny it was the Labor imbeciles who started their too expensive NeverBuiltNetwork chaotic shambles.

Yet another corrupt union controlled Labor disaster.

It took Labor several years to negotiate contracts and fix the back haul to install FTTH which was started in the country....When the Coalition took over and changed the mix they started installing in the cities and built up areas where premises could be connected a lot faster as the ground work had already been done....I would have no problem blaming Labor if their policy had failed but it is the Coalitions Multi Technology Mix that is failing and becoming harder to manage and provide the service the NBN was promised to deliver....The blame lies with Malcolm Turnbull who delivered this mess not Labor who's policy would have delivered fast reliable broadband which is now impossible to deliver under Turnbulls MTM....Turnbull needs to own his mistakes and stop blaming problems on Labor he created!!!

is Bill on holidays or is Albo making a run for :abor Leadership?
Someone should tell Albo the roll out is faster than it was under Labor and that not everyone needs a rolled gold NBN connection.
In fact it appears most don't. Roll Eyes

The MTM is a mistake of Turnbull's doing....

Quote:
The MTM network has blown out twice in projected cost - first, from $29.5 billion to $41 billion, and then last year to "up to" $56 billion. And instead of delivering 25 Mbps by 2016, now the MTM network isn't expected to be finished until 2020 - only a year earlier than Labor expected to finish its rollout. NBN's own chairman has admitted meeting this 2020 target will require a "heroic" effort.

Quote:
The PM and communications minister Mitch Fifield are being cute when they say - as they did again yesterday - that reverting to Labor's fibre-to-the-premises NBN would take an extra 6-8 years to complete and cost an extra $30 billion. That is an estimate of the cost of going back to Labor's NBN, after having embarked upon the Coalition's version in 2013. It is not the amount that Labor's NBN would have cost if it had continued as originally planned. Obviously, it is much more inefficient to change horses mid-stream, then change back again.

The Lefties keep denying it was the Labor imbeciles who stuffed up their too expensive NeverBuiltNetwork.

Labor wanted to create a Socialist Spying Network with fiber optic cable into every house so they could spy on dissidents.

Labor also tried to BAN FREE SPEECH.

Shades of East Germany before the Berlin Wall came down.
