Australia's 10 most favourite dogs ...
Nov 26th, 2017 at 1:04pm

link.

I wouldn't get a Labrador. They become high-maintenance with needing repeated visits to the vets once they get into their declining years.

They're also too big, and drag mud into the house during rainy periods, which means they get locked out of the family lounge and become a barking nuisance to the neighbours.

For suburbanites the ideal canine pet is a dog you can easily pick up to dry its paws or put it in the bath, and it only needs a brief brushing to get rid of those loose hairs.

I would never get an Alsatian after the experience I had with two of my brother's dogs. Their vicious wild ancestors are too close to the surface in even the seemingly most friendly of them.

luckily   its a to each his own situation with owning any pet   my kids were brought up with a black Lab   he was wonderful..never locked out ever....I think any animal big or small has to have lots and lots of exercise where they gets lots of fun and smells  and do what ever it is that makes them happy...if you cant do that for them  then dont have one...keeping one locked up in a backyard must be like looking out of one window every day of your life..

they need hugs and different things to do as much as we do..

dear Herby,
I can't agree ,
you'll find that Labs & Golden Retrievers are the only dogs allowed
in school yards around kids -
they are safe dogs to have around people.
They have a place in society which is why people will always want them.
Some of them are intelligent enough to be guide dogs.

I have two Huskies.
I move them away from other dogs on leashes with their owners when walking. They naturally fight and are 'extremely' strong. Quite an effort to walk, as they naturally 'pull' against the harness. Not a dog to walk when retired. The male tore my shoulder ligament early this year.

Breed Bodily harm Child Victims Adult Victims Deaths Maiming % of dog population
Pit bull 2235 911 806 233 1268 4.4
Rottweiler 495 278 131 81 277 2.2
Husky 71 44 5 24 20 0.05
German shepherd 96 60 28 14 59 2.3
Chow 55 36 16 7 37 0.01%

Well said.

Of my several next door neighbours a total of three dogs are never walked by them, and until a few weeks ago another set of neighbours, opposite, never walked their big dog either.

Very definitely in my more extended neighbourhood the vast majority of dogs are never walked. The most responsible dog-owners are the women.

Google:

'The Labrador Retriever, or just Labrador, is a type of retriever-gun dog. The Labrador is one of the most popular breeds of dog in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Wikipedia

Life span: 10 – 14 years

Temperament: Intelligent, Outgoing, Trusting, Gentle, Even Tempered, Agile, Kind

Height: Male: 57–62 cm, Female: 55–60 cm
Weight: Male: 29–36 kg, Female: 25–32 kg
Colors: Black, Chocolate, Yellow

Did you know: Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed by registrations (191,988) worldwide. wikipedia.org'

That's a very short life span. You set yourself up for a very sad time within only a few short years.

Labs can bight but it's very rare. You'd have to so badly mistreat a lab to make one vicious or it would have to be born mentally ill.

The only negative things about Labs is they're a greedy guts and of all the dogs are most likely to eat dogsheet.

They also shed like crazy

There is no such thing as a safe dog
Under the right circumstances any dog can be dangerous

I agree to an extent, however any idiot can make a dog dangerous............

Sure but you not agree that some dogs are higher risk than others?

Dogs which are brought up from a pup correctly; socialised with people, other dogs, cats etc and with the environment, can usually be considered safe, that is the reason they use Labs as guide dogs. However, given the right (or wrong) circumstances any animal can revert to underlying territorial, protective, and natural instinctive behaviour.......
