'Great' Movies that stay Great.
Nov 17th, 2017 at 4:00pm

In the current era. We see a sausage-factory production line of 'crap' movies just rolling out. You can tell they are 'machined' out - they have so much saturation of 'special FX' to get the by.

These movies lack originality, story and - style.
There are more 'sequels' and 'remakes' made now than ever before. Hollywood has 'folded back' on itself.

So here is a bit of a look-back to some 'Great' Movies.
To me, a Great movie is one that still lasts the test of time, where 'remakes' have failed to surpass it and originality, style and story make for a successful, unforgettable movie.

Now I hope I can post a clip. This system fails me for some reason - as I can't post the clip or someone else's clip appears. So bear with me.
If it can't happen, then maybe someone can do it for me?

Here is one of my choices - a movie that still 'stands alone' as a Great.
Directed by John Boorman,
EXCALIBUR
had 'everything'!
So well paced and structured. From the green glint on the sword of Excalibur, to the real metal clang of the suits. From the real characters and their flaws, to the good acting from future stars. The realism is stunning, the style exceptional and the drama and action - superb.
It has more, I'm sure.

I've chosen an O'Fortuna (Carl Orff) clip to showcase Excalibur. This piece of Music has never fitted so perfectly  than with this movie - both worked exceptionally well together. Another aspect of a Great Movie.

Bummer. Can only hyper-link it.

Excalibur?
I hated Merlin in it...
Not one of my picks.

Gregory Peck...
The Big Country.
Moby Dick.
To Kill a Mockingbird.

Richard Burton...
Where Eagles Dare.

Alan Ladd...
Shane.

Charleton Heston...
The Naked Jungle.
Ben Hur

Just to name a few...

I would put
Shane
&
Ben Hur
as 'great' movies.
The others are 'good' - mainly due to just a good story or good acting or 'popularity' at the booth.

Ben Hur
was immensely a 'great' movie on many levels and wasn't really surpassed or at least 'joined' until
Gladiator
(Crowe) came along. Alas, 'scrawny' Heston is a typical example of the American 'tough guy' who had the physic of a white-collar who does gym work - in those days.

I guess this is where
Conan: the Barbarian
, although not a 'Great' movie - did become a 'Game-Changer' in the way people got to see 'tough guys' from then on. For one thing - they now actually had 'muscles'.  Grin

Well that Hercules dude did look the part.
So why didn't it kick off until Arnie did Conan - when the floodgates opened and every action/tough guy was 'built'?
Maybe he was too talkative and intellectual?
Tarzan looks ok, but still not your fully buffed bloke.

Anything with Anthony Hopkins playing the leading roles have been re-watchable classics.

Also have enjoyed a lot of Michael Douglas movies.

For nearly the last 20 years its as though creativity, imagination, story telling and everything else that goes into a good movie have vanished especially from Hollywood.

NO new ideas, we need a change of the guard me thinks.

Some of the great movies of recent times.

1. Shawshank redemption
2. Titanic
3. Forrest Gump

to name a few, and I do love those old classics some have already mentioned.

It kicked off long before Arnie.
Kirk Morris and Iloosh Khoshabe in Hercules vs Samson.

...

there were losts of sand and sandal, hercules and gladiator movies in the 1950s...  more than there has been since.

As a kid I think I've watched all those strong man movies.

Late 1960's early 1970's every sunday my whole family watched championship wrestling on CH9 because of the golden Greek Spiros Arion, there was also King Curtis, Mark Lewin, The tojo brothers, Big Bad John Abdulah the butcher but to name a few.

Right after the wreslting all the adults use to leave and I was left KING of the television, straight after the wrestling every sunday there was a show called EPIC THEATRE which had all the strong man movies, I watched them religiously until I was old enough to go outside.

LLLEEEWWWINNNNNN when I woke up this morning and looked in the mirror I saw the bandages from last Saturday night. King Curtis

Jack Little:  WOW no comment.....!

Did you know that 'Killer Kawolski' nearly killed Don Lane on-camera when he simply 'lost it' and kept choking harder on Lane?

No.

I watched Don Lane telling this story in an interview, and you could see he had been terrified.

How about Mario Milano? Big name.
