Cory Bernadi's anti-abortion ploy
Nov 17th, 2017 at 12:35pm

Coalition senators defy government position to cross the floor over Cory Bernadi's anti-abortion ploy

It was supposed to be a day of harmony in the Senate as Parliament basked in the loved-up glow of the postal survey result.

But Cory Bernardi had other ideas.

Just before lunchtime on Thursday, the Australian Conservatives senator moved a series of motions in the Senate attacking abortion, communism, progressive activists GetUp! and White Ribbon Australia, which works to stop violence against women.

Only one of the motions - which are used to record what the Senate thinks - was successful. But for about half an hour, they caused chaos as Coalition MPs split during the votes and other senators yelled abuse at each other. This comes with government MPs already divided over how to legalise same-sex marriage.

One of Senator Bernardi's motions asked the Senate to "oppose Medicare funding for the termination of pregnancy, where it occurs on gender grounds".

The government's formal position was to oppose the motion. But nine other senators backed Senator Bernardi's move, including Coalition frontbenchers Matt Canavan, Zed Seselja and Anne Ruston, and One Nation. Abortion law in Australia is a state and territory matter and Medicare does not specifically fund sex-selection abortions.

In a separate motion, Senator Bernardi asked senators to challenge White Ribbon about its advocacy around "nationally consistent access to safe and legal abortion, including late-term abortion in all states and territories". White Ribbon receives some federal funding.

While the motion was defeated 31 to 21, it still attracted a significant number of Coalition votes, including from Finance Minister Mathias Cormann and Minister for Women Michaelia Cash. It also caused confusion among some government senators, including Communications Minister Mitch Fifield, who walked over to the Labor side, before walking back to the government side. Education Minister Simon Birmingham and Senator Ruston abstained.

After the motion, Sarah Hanson-Young tried to make a statement about the vote. "You bunch of misogynistic ... This is about rape victims having access to safe and legal abortion. That's what you just voted against," the Greens senator said before being cut off by Senate President Scott Ryan.

Coalition MP Ian Macdonald called Senator Hanson-Young a "dill" in reply. He was asked to withdraw but refused the President's ruling.

Senator Bernardi's other motions calling for greater scrutiny of GetUp! and praising plans to teach students about driving a car rather than "radical theories about gender and sexuality" also failed to get to the required votes. Another motion about commemorating the victims of communism was successful.

The scenes in the Senate follow the start of debate on legalising same-sex marriage, which Senator Bernardi heartily opposes.

Jesus Christ, the coalition sure has some human garbage.

"Coalition MP Ian Macdonald called Senator Hanson-Young a "dill" in reply."

That'd be the same Ian Macdonald who said "GetUp! is the Hitler Youth wing of the Greens political movement."

The same prick who told Labor Senator Doug Cameron that he needs to "learn to speak English" (he has a thick Scottish accent).

And as far as Bernardi goes, well ... he's not even worth discussing.

Cory is an utter imbecile but even for him, lashing out against communism is hilarious.

Rupert's done a good job, eh?

Sometimes I think Bernardi might be from a different planet.

"This website is dedicated to restoring common sense and conservative principles as the best way forward for our nation.

"I make no apologies for defending the important things that have made our nation great: our families, our economic freedom and the traditional values which have been the cornerstone of our society.

"Subscribers to my e-letter receive a weekly dose of common sense that is almost guaranteed to entertain, amuse and infuriate. I also share my regular column of ‘controversial ideas’ that political Left would prefer you didn't hear about because they challenge their radical agenda."

Check out this imbecile.

His reply directly addressing the SSM victory:

"The result of the marriage postal survey is in and nearly 40% of Australians voted NO to redefining marriage.

"A great many more Australians also have concerns about the consequences for our cherished freedoms, such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of conscience."

Blah, blah, blah, okay.

But THEN, he goes on to say:

"Australian parents are worried about the LGBT agenda being proselytised through the abominable ‘safe schools’ program and parents being denied the right to have a say in what is being taught to our children."

Nothing to do with SSM, Cory!

Nothing.

Where's your "common sense" now, you ignorant twit?

It's one thing to be a Conservative...  its another thing to push religious beliefs in a secular society...

Someone needs to sit Bernadi down and have a long hard chat with him.

Anti-Abortion sits well with religious extremists not Conservatives.

Does that make you an imbecile too..  I mean you said okay?
BTW it is ok.

Well sorry, but you are wrong.  It is about social change just as SSM is about social change.  You gonna deny that now huh?  More eggy waiting for you if you do.
You do remember the claims re equality right?
SSchools is about indoctrinating children and changing their fundamental mindset about sex, specifically...gender and sexuality.
So...  he's got that right too eh.
  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Nothing.
You are right...  YOU have nothing.

Where's your "common sense" now, you ignorant twit?
Just more baseless abuse from an ignorant  TROLL.

Oh dear.  It looks like we have 21 MPs who think (if that be the right word) that it OK for women to be physically, sexually and emotionally abused by their partners.
