It doesn't matter any more ... my PC is screwed beyond anything I can do with it. Come Monday it's down at the Computer Workshop for a clean wipe and re-install.

A couple of times I've set up everything as it should be, but then on restarting the PC at a later time everything I've done has simply disappeared. The bookmarks etc.

And my external hard drive that has a full copy of my files, the system, etc refuses to release these back onto the Computer's hard drive.

Herb, how do you manage to screw your PC up so often. What are you doing man.

Do you use Regedit?

If you do you really need to know what you are doing. That is the mot likely reason things get screwed up on a regular basis in my experience.

He fills it with crap he doesn't need.

Norton, ad blockers, etc.

He's been told a million times not to add all that crap, but he just won't listen.

It's his own fault, and I no longer feel sorry for him.

If he insists on downloading programs that he doesn't need (and that actually cause many more problems than they solve), he deserves everything he gets.

Windows + AVG Free.  That's it!

Add anything else, and you're just asking for trouble.

if you download crap, they will not have good and clean install and remove procedures so that will screw things up.

If their install procedures edit the register (and most times they must) they may screw with parameters needed by other programs sometimes. Uninstalls are not clean. If you uninstall in a different order to the install order (that is in reverse) this issue really comes to the fore.

The only solution is to take backup before installing each and every crap software, record the order and when they screw up, restore to your last known working system, and go forward again.

As to sympathy, I have none but learning through trial and error works if you learn from your mistakes. so playing should be encouraged if you learn from it.

Herb, there are some good books. I have the Windows internals, wow  heavy read but it give you a good insight to how things work. They cost a bit but a really very interesting.

Regedit? No.

What gave rise to this latest train-wreck was that I tried to do a DIY on getting rid of Browser Hijacker Redirectors that were taking me to advertising sites (clothing, etc) only to find that the full backup in my external hard drive wouldn't restore back to the local C:Drive. Wrong extensions (PDR or Prd).

I did the full backup with EaseUS Todo Backup with no trouble, but using the same EaseUS Todo Backup app has failed to restore a single file.

The Computer Shop with do the job tomorrow, and then I'll try another paid version of a Backup app. Probably Acronis which worked well for me for some years before it crashed.

While you are in the shop, get them to setup your backup and demonstrate it works and a restore works to you.

So then you leave knowing it works.

That would takes hours with me hanging around the shop. There's a queue down there.

I've got the EaseUS Backup app to start restoring the files backed up in the external hard drive, but every file is listed as Failed to operate file.
