Sydney is all about the Leagues/Night Clubs.
That's where the 'crowds' are.
As for the 'sport' of NRL - well, its a bit of a lame duck.
Always jealous of the AFL that gets crowds like 80,000 to a non-final game.
NRL made its first mistake by making Grand Final/club-level games a priority (to compete with AFL).
It should have stuck to the International Tests - to which even the Melbournians watched.
This World Cup is like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.
Follow a strength, don't chase a weakness.
The one thing about your post that sticks out is the idea of having 80,000 people attend a club game in the AFL. The MCG could fit 80,000 people into a local derby club game and not think twice about it. We see 70,000 people brave the Boxing Day test for the cricket. Then it tapers off the next few days. What club game do you find in the AFL (outside the MCG games) that could host 80,000. The Stadium Australia NRL games could host 80,000 at a game for finals, and State of Origin games. Brisbane can host 50,000+ games. Old QE2 stadium used to host 60,000 plus games in the season a Friday night, and people would not blink at the numbers.
The other issue is the international tests. I have to agree, that even though rugby league is popular in Australia, New Zealand, and PNG, the rest of the world does not give much of a damn about it. England were strong in the 1990s. But I think they are more concerned about soccer and union. When it was Australia vs Great Britain, that were the days when we could watch tough matches. Australia vs New Zealand is the only real competition internationally.
