Disappointed that the Aussies didn't do their little dance before the game with France.

Were they afraid the French would respond with the Can-Can?

Rugby Union is so much better.

Rugby league is a bit boring -
they just play the same moves over and over again.

Yeah.
Coming from Sydney. Even I can admit that it's one of the dumbest codes of sport in the country. It's only asset is that it is the best 'tackling' facet of Australian sport - so much so, that the Sydney Swans lifted the bar in AFL concerning 'tackling' - as you saw the Richmond Tigers do against Adelaide.
But overall - NRL is 'stoopid'. Majority of its rules are farsical and inconsistent.

Not only that - Most people in Sydney go to Clubs, rather than watch Footy.
Unlike in Melbourne, where they all go to the footy and hardly the Clubs.  Grin
Going to Penrith & Cronulla Leagues Club - just as packed as an Essendon v Hawks game.

Sydney is all about the Leagues/Night Clubs.
That's where the 'crowds' are.
As for the 'sport' of NRL - well, its a bit of a lame duck.
Always jealous of the AFL that gets crowds like 80,000 to a non-final game.

NRL made its first mistake by making Grand Final/club-level games a priority (to compete with AFL).
It should have stuck to the International Tests - to which even the Melbournians watched.
This World Cup is like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.

Follow a strength, don't chase a weakness.

The one thing about your post that sticks out is the idea of having 80,000 people attend a club game in the AFL. The MCG could fit 80,000 people into a local derby club game and not think twice about it. We see 70,000 people brave the Boxing Day test for the cricket. Then it tapers off the next few days. What club game do you find in the AFL (outside the MCG games) that could host 80,000. The Stadium Australia NRL games could host 80,000 at a game for finals, and State of Origin games. Brisbane can host 50,000+ games. Old QE2 stadium used to host 60,000 plus games in the season a Friday night, and people would not blink at the numbers.

The other issue is the international tests. I have to agree, that even though rugby league is popular in Australia, New Zealand, and PNG, the rest of the world does not give much of a damn about it. England were strong in the 1990s. But I think they are more concerned about soccer and union. When it was Australia vs Great Britain, that were the days when we could watch tough matches. Australia vs New Zealand is the only real competition internationally.

I was going to say something about this. Surprised me that it was only a 4 - 2 game. I was expecting it to be a try difference.

I didn't know much about Fiji before the game other than that they're considered a 2nd tier team ... I expected NZ to romp it in

Fiji can be competitive when they try hard. They even win a few games. But I would have expected NZ to have won by 20 points. Either NZ did not come expecting a competition, or Fiji put up a good fight. I think it a little of both.

Competitive when they try hard. I guess tonight was not that night.
