Welfare costing taxpayers $300,000 a minute

Welfare costing taxpayers $300,000 a minute

PAULINE Hanson has called for an Australian identity card during an interview about welfare costs.

In an appearance on Sunrise, the One Nation leader said she blamed both Labour and Greens parties for refusing to support cuts to welfare payments. She also accused people of cheating the system.

According to new figures published in the Herald Sun this morning,
welfare is now costing Australian taxpayers $300,000 a minute
.

The overall figure has increased $40 billion in the last 10 years.

he numbers, which came from reports from the Department of Social Service and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, showed that more than 733,000 people received unemployment benefits last year, at a cost of $10 billion.

"I am calling for the Australian identity card," Hanson said. "There are a lot of people who are on [welfare], who shouldn't be on it. There's a lot of fraud that's happening."

She claimed that there are about 80,000 people on disability pensions who shouldn't be. (you know the ones)

Ms Hanson said the "government wants to rein in kids that leave school at the end of the year who go straight onto welfare payment".

Ms Hanson retorted saying: "I am talking about welfare cheats, people rorting the system, people who shouldn't collect welfare.

Pensioners have nothing to do with it. Unless we rein this in we will not have the money to truly look after those that need the helping hand."

And this massive impost on taxpayers would dramatically be increased by about 10 times if Bull S. ever got in as he bloated the public service and created permanent jobs at CentreLink.

That is after he RESTARTED the BOATS and INCREASED electricity prices to stratospheric levels freezing pensioners during winter.

TAXPAYERS are coughing up $300,000 a minute for a welfare bill that has soared $40 billion in 10 years.

The Herald Sun can reveal that the total lifetime welfare bill for all those currently receiving benefits has been estimated at $2.1 trillion.

renewing concerns about the public cost of supporting those who game the system or are locked into a cycle of welfare dependency.

Remarkably, anyone currently receiving government help to study is expected to be on welfare for nearly half of the rest of their lives, costing taxpayers an average of $247,000.

Startling figures in two new reports from the Department of Social Services and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare highlight the challenge of reining in welfare costs.

Last year, more than 733,000 people received unemployment benefits, costing $10 billion, up from $5.6 billion a decade ago.

The number of students receiving the Youth Allowance dropped by almost 10 per cent in two years, saving $400 million.

The Herald Sun revealed earlier this year that more than 100,000 jobseekers who were on the dole for at least five years had cost taxpayers $15 billion over the past decade.

The government has already found $30 billion in welfare savings by toughening compliance measures for dole recipients, as well as by adjusting pension and family tax payments.

Social Services Minister Christian Porter said: “My job as Minister is to ensure taxpayer funds are spent on helping those who actually need it, and that we aren’t borrowing money to fund the welfare system of our time, as this just forces our children to pay it off through higher taxes in the future.”

The $2.1 trillion bill, detailed in the Department of Social Services annual report, was calculated by PricewaterhouseCoopers based on modelling of how people typically moved through the welfare system.

Mr Porter said welfare spending made up almost a third of the federal budget, and the government was now handing out benefits worth $430 million a day.

The nation’s total annual welfare bill of $157 billion now accounts for 9.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, up from 8.6 per cent a decade ago.

The DSS report revealed two-thirds of people on the dole managed to get off it within a year, while 80 per cent of students were no longer receiving any benefits 12 months after they stopped receiving the Youth Allowance.

Mr Porter said the growth of those two payments under Labor was 13.5 per cent, which was “entirely unsustainable” and had been reduced, meaning “more people in jobs and less on welfare”.

Opposition employment spokesman Brendan O’Connor said last week Labor was “up for the conversation” about the support for job seekers.

“We want to be making sure that people move from welfare to work in a genuine way,” he said.

Opposition social services spokeswoman Jenny Macklin said the reports highlighted a “serious problem with underemployment”.

She said 10 per cent of workers wanted more hours but couldn’t get them, while a quarter of the unemployed had been out of a job for more than a year.

Last year, 65.8 per cent of those aged over 65 received a pension, down from 69 per cent due to changes to the assets test, but the total pensions bill still climbed to $44 billion.

When we talk about welfare recipients, we often think about a) welfare grabbers, who are in generation welfare families, often with a criminal or addiction background.  Or b) poor looking new refugees coming to Australia.

However, the truth cannot be more far away.  By far, the highest burden of welfare in Australia, is our ageing population - and those on aged care pension - either, full pensioners, or part pensioners.   Part pensioners, can have their own residence - not counted in the asset assessment, and then other assets upto 800 000 for couples.

And this is not all.  Increasing ageing population also increase the burden of spending on health care, and aged care.

And these people are not all left wing labor.  Most of the full and part pensioners in the rural areas, and part time pensioners in the more wealthier city areas are in fact liberal voters.  And I am not surprised if some of the most right wing  people here are receiving some sort of pension, or part pensioners.

So becareful who you are attacking.  It could be your own voting base.   Wink

"$300,000 a minute".

1440 minutes a day, 365 days a year.

$300,000 × 1440 × 365 = $157,680,000,000.

The figure is BULLSHIT.  Angry

Why do you morons keep posting rubbish figures without bothering to do even basic fact checking?

Is Futility in search of Failure worried ?

Geez the Lefties are sounding a bit nervious.

The Libs are doing a very good job purging the Welfare of rorters. Protect your tax money and dob in a dole bludger today!!!

What a difference to Juliar Gillard who encouraged Lefties to go onto Welfare because once they get a taste of Welfare they will vote for Socialist Labor forever. Well that is the theory.

Juliar Gillard even brought people in from overseas on the boats to boost the numbers on Welfare. Then Tony STOPPED THE BOATS.

These are the dole bludgers Labor pushed onto Welfare during the six sick years of Labor's Socialist waste and disgrace.

Taxpayers forking out $300,000 a minute for welfare

VIDEO: NEWS: New figures reveal rising cost of welfare spend

Australian taxpayers are shelling out $300,000 per minute to foot the nation’s welfare bill, according to a report.

Welfare spending reportedly accounts for about a third of the federal government’s budget, and costs taxpayers about $430 million per day.

The total lifetime welfare bill for those receiving benefits has also been estimated at $2.1 trillion, The Herald Sun reports.

Students currently receiving government financial support to study are expected to need welfare for half their lives, costing taxpayers about $250,000.

Aussie's fork out nearly $430 million per day for welfare.

However, two-thirds of people on welfare no longer received it within a year, the Department of Social Services (DSS) said.

"My job as Minister is to ensure taxpayer funds are spent on helping those who actually need it, and that we aren’t borrowing money to fund the welfare system of our time, as this just forces our children to pay it off through higher taxes in the future," DSS Minister Christian Port told the newspaper.
