Best known for his humorous series Rumpole of the Bailey, turned into a hugely successful TV series with Australia's own Leo McKern in the title role.

Here's a riotously funny speech he gave, where or when I don't know, about his family background in the law & so on.
It's about an hour long. I can't link it but this is where you'll find it if you are interested - it is very very funny:

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.

One of the anecdotes concerns Lord Arran, who was responsible for the passing of two major bills through the House of Lords - the Buggers Bill (as he calls it, really the Sexual Offences Bill) and the Preservation of Wildlife Bill.

He never could understand why, when the Buggers Bill was debated, the place was packed,  you couldn't get in the Visitors Gallery, hanging from the chandeliers etc. But when the Bill came up about saving the badgers, there was about three people there.

A friend explained it to him in his old age. "My Lord, have you ever thought how many badgers there are in the House of Lords?"

Mortimer wrote a number of best sellers apart from Rumpole of course.
"Paradise Postponed" and "Titmuss Regained" were a saga about life, politics & change in England in the period 1950-80. They were also turned into successful TV series.
