Tarong bounces back 5 years after LNP put Power Station units into storage

The ETU has praised the Palaszczuk Government for bringing local jobs back to the community of Tarong by putting two power station units back online which were placed into cold storage by the LNP.

This week marks five years to do the day the Newman Government placed two of the units at the Tarong Power Station into cold storage, in order to raise Stanwell revenues prior to planned privatisation of the company.

The decision – made while current LNP leader Tim Nicholls was Treasurer – lead to massive job losses which devastated the local community, and contributed to the high spike in power prices under the Newman Government.

ETU Organiser Jason Young said the electrical workers in South Burnett were proud of the Palaszczuk Government’s decision to reverse the LNP’s mistake.

“Five years ago the wannabe leader of this state rubberstamped placing these units into cold storage in order to fatten up the price of Stanwell for his Strong Choices privatisation plans,” he said.

“All the while local Member Deb Frecklington – who is now the wannabe deputy leader of Queensland – stood by and did nothing to stop jobs being gutted from her electorate.

“Thankfully the Palaszczuk Government has reversed this disastrous decision, which drove up electricity prices, and has put both units back online and helped bring these jobs back to Tarong.”

Mr Young said the Palaszczuk Government was leading the way in driving down electricity price increases, with Queensland seeing the lowest increases in the country this year.

When Tim Nicholls was Treasurer of Queensland the state’s wholesale electricity price increase was the highest in Australia. Electricity prices went up by 81 per cent between 2011-12 and 2014-15.

Yep .... just like they're trying to blame her for QR rail fails.

All set in motion by the Newman LNP govt. They slashed the driver jobs ... they sent the new train build contract to India & they don't work & ....

they bought all the non compatible signalling system that caused the delays in opening the new rail line to Redcliffe.

Yes. After all the subject is Queensland power prices.

Don't you think it imperative in manipulation of electricity prices by governments, that price go UP using coal fired power?

What are you on about?

Prices were inflated because the LNP shut down 2 turbines at Tarong.

Thus reducing baseload capacity & increasing prices.

The price rise used as an incentive to prospective buyers in the sell off Stanwell Power Station to private enterprise.

Stanwell is coal fired as well.

What? state labor?

I'd say yes... the companies apply for price increases just like the CPI increases.

Bringing back more generation capacity should help to drop or alleviate any further increases.

Those turbines should never have been mothballed in the first place.

As the state continued to grow, except for the devious LNP reasons to artificially manipulate the price, why would you decrease capacity when the demand for power was increasing?

It's absolute greed & deception.

So Labor Queensland is a government, prices have gone up. But they are pure as the driven snow, and is not one of those governments that manipulate electricity prices. Got it. Wink

Won't be long now until the fracking begins

And in a few years the lollies will be wringing their hands lamenting the cancers and dead crops

Then they will blame someone else, move to another country and live on their bribes and pensions

While Australians die
