Melb. to Sydney on one charge!

We don't hear about this great success anymore.

Update (12/11/15): A Brighsun spokesperson tells us the bus made the trip to Sydney successfully (see photo below), and we will be speaking to Saylav about the details of the journey, and for a general interview, in the coming week.

All-electric bus unveiled in Melbourne, heading to Sydney on one charge
By Sophie Vorrath on October 30, 2015

A prototype all-electric bus that its developers say can be driven from Melbourne to Sydney on a single charge was unveiled in Melbourne on Friday, ahead of a road-test on Saturday that will see it undertake the interstate journey.

The launch, held at Yuroke, one hour north of Melbourne’s CBD, by Australia-based company Brighsun, showcased a total of four prototype full electric buses ranging from high range capacity route service passenger buses to touring coaches.

Federal environment minister Greg Hunt attended the launch, and confirmed that the bus was officially certified, to international standards, to drive a huge 1004km on one charge.

Well for all the naysayers like Longweekend -

he can put that in his pipe and smoke it.
This country is full of Luddites.

Nail & I predicted all this over 10 years ago on Yahoo politics
and we were laughed at & made fun of -

it will never happen

electric vehicles will only go 100km & then need recharging etc.

Good story and good progress but look at all that room for batteries, I doubt that this can be considered in terms of a normal car.

The good part of the story is that this does seem to be a commercial use for the technology - wonder what the charging time and life expectancy / cost is for the batteries used.

Also have to consider the trip time and how city performance would go. But very promising.

  • The lithium used to manufacture the batteries is running out !!
  • What about the GHG produced to manufacture the batteries ?
  • Where does the power used to charge the batteries come from ?

They want to use these lame excuses to can the idea so they can keep setting fire to coal and oil Sad

And of course you are going to tell us that lithium is not running out.
You are going to tell us the he emissions producing batteries are non-existent or so low they don't rate
You are going to tell us that the power for recharging is all from renewable sources and that PV cells and wind generators are made using renewable energy.

And of course you won't provide he data to show your claims. But you will post a youtube from someone who works for Tesla. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

I did give the reserves in years, remember? 17 years lithium, 150 coal, 50 oil.

The batteries for the bus are merely another use. That will shorten the number of years available yet again.

Yes. And there is still a maximum number of batteries it can produce.

Every new application will have its own demand. The more demand the less time the supply of lithium will last. Even if you recycle you have to have the dud batteries in the first place. You can't take them off the functioning uses.

You can't create more batteries with no lithium. You still need lithium supply.
