Not correct.  That Nats won the popular vote...but may not form Government.  That will not be known for at least a week or so.

Labor could still govern if they join with the Greens & Winston Peters.
However - Winston is more likely to join up with the National party.

Not correct.  That Nats won the popular vote...but may not form Government.  That will not be known for at least a week or so.

That depends on NZ First. They could choose to give the Nationals another term in power, or could form a bloc with Labour and the Greens.

Approximate seat numbers:

Nationals 58
Labour 45
NZ First 9
Greens 7
ACT NZ 1

Nationals + ACT + NZ First = 68
Labour + Greens + NZ First = 61

NZ First have supported both major NZ parties in the past. I expect they will give support to the Nationals this time.

And people whined like banshees after the hung parliament of the 2010 Australian Federal election required a lot of negotiation to form government. Roll Eyes That kind of negotiation occurs after almost every New Zealand election.

Does anyone know how the Kiwi voting system works?

Anyone?

No, no.

Caesar scores again....
---
NZ has a system of proportional representation (i.e. seats are allocated to each party according to the percentage of votes received by the electors), according to a manner of mixed-member proportional representation.

This means:

1) there are 2 classes of MPs - approx. 60% of the members are elected to single-member electorates; whilst the remaining 40% are 'additional members' (if any) allocated to each party based on the vote.

2) electors cast two votes: one for their local candidate and the second for the party. The second vote is more important as it determines the relative strength of parties in the House of Representatives.

3) let's say there are 100 seats: Party A wins 40 single-member seats, but gets 51% of the vote. Party A will receive 11 additional members (from the 40%), resulting in 51 seats in total.

4) if a party wins more single-member seats than the total percentage of votes received, then the House of Reps is further increased by such number so that other parties get their share of seats.
-----
Advantages:

1) Creates a multi-party system without fracturing the House too much (i.e. usually 3 or 4 parties maximum).

2) Voters have alternatives to contact members other than their local candidate.

Disadvantages:

1) creates two classes of members - voters might be confused

2) doesn't create stable government.

Despite LW's chortles NZ certainly lost to be ground into the ground by a Labor "Govt" with TEETH that's already trying to conspire with the DARK SIDE here to RESTART the BOATS.

But Mal and Dutto have cut Bull S. off at the pass as the Libs STOP the BOATS AGAIN!!! What an election winner!!!

There was only one vote that counted. Winston Peters in forming a coalition of losers.

I'll just sit back and watch these leftards implode. One termers written all over their vacant foreheads.

It is a disgrace to see the MMP system so clearly flaunted by the clear minority groups, but, it happenned, wait and see what Jacinda will call her baby...part of the deal was that it will be called Winston.
