I spoke to a man who was a soldier in the desert war in WW2 against Rommel.
He said that they used the Lee-Enfield .303 to hit German vehicles from as far as a mile away.
It was a very good sniper rifle - at 500 yards an enemy soldier was a sitting duck.

It was an excellent service long arm.  It was developed first before the 2nd Boer War and continues to soldier on today.   It was robust and able to function in conditions that destroyed other service weapons on the Western Front in WWI.   It was first intended to replace it before WWI but the outbreak of war stopped that.  It was next intended to replace it before WWII and the outbreak of war stopped that.   It was finally replaced in the late 1950s.

But Herby is right - you can even break your collar bone
if you don't hold it firmly against your shoulder.
It can also cause your ears to ring if you don't put some tissue paper in your ear canal.
The .303 is a full power rifle & packs a real punch.
At the same time the medium speed muzzle velocity doesn't make
the bullet tumble - it flies true & straight so it's
great as a sniper rifle.
It's the most under rated rifle ever made.
Cops must be really scared of them -
the bullet will go through any "bullet proof" jacket.

I often wonder about cops who break down doors & invade peoples houses -
there are so many of those .303s still around & they are a fearsome weapon.

It's outdated now though. It's range let's it down.

Most armed combat shooting is done over shorter ranges. The Steyr with its bullpup design is good for urban warfare. The SLR has a better cyclic rate of fire.

Errr, you do realise that the .303in round exceeds the ranges of most modern Assault rifles?   Roll Eyes

It is good to see you can have this type of conversation without interjecting you political views.

The Small Magazine Lee Enfield or Smelly was an excellent rifle for its time and still has its uses. Careful aimed shots as opposed to spray and pray are more effective at longer ranges. It was comparable to the 8mm Mauser and 30-06 Springfield rounds, the AK-47s 7.62x39 is comparable to the 30-30. You wouldn't want to use them for the same purpose.

The AK borrowed heavily from the STG-44 and because it could be produced cheaply and performed reliably under harsh conditions it became the success we see today.

I think you would need to work at it to break your collar bone but holding it loosely under recoil could give you quite a painful whack. If you can't use real hearing protection at least plug your ears with cigarette filters, actually that is also useless but I have seen it done. Put your fingers in your ears to prevent hearing damage if you don't have ear plugs or muffs and leave the area.

So what would be the recommendation for getting around the USA?
I picture a neat little Uzi - but in movies, they seem to miss a lot.
What would be a not too big, but not too crap - gun?

Maybe a paranoid idiot like you should stay here.

I was recently in Bristol Rhode island, no murders there for over a decade so it's safer than Sydney- http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Bristol-Rhode-Island.html

I also went to Punta Gorda Florida, 3 murders in the last 16 years so it's safer than Sydney- http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Punta-Gorda-Florida.html

Does this guy have an Uzi?

For you, I recommend a Golf Putter and a butter knife.

Stuff it. I'll ask Marla then. I'm sure she will give me a piece if I turn up there.

Shouldn't a good piece be well oiled?
