How can democracy survive when consequences are not allowed to be discussed in the public space?
I say it cannot: what do the baby boomers say?
Civilisation has always been a matter of degree. "Western Civilisation" has the ring of an absolute. It is not. Once again I call for definitions of civilisation.
You seem to be referring to attention we give to noisy minorities. That has come about through a long process and the development of their vehicle. Once the Church ruled in the West, then Monarchs, then a combination of the two. After that, it was political parties and unions, with occasional military intervention. But beyond the bayonet, it has come down to the vehicle of political persuasion, which is media editorial and journalism.
Trump is too dumb to realise that his "Fake News" accusations would have been far more believable, if he had addressed the reality. News today is intentionally garbled by mixing actual reports of events with the opinions of the editorial staff. Take a look at the front page of any media and you will see opinion dressed up as news.
There is no one "holier than though" than a journalist assuring us they are defending our freedom. Yes, the press should be free, but editors and journalists are taking great liberties with what we call News.
Democracy is supposed to be the rule of the majority, not the rule of the loudest.
