Fruit and Veg
Sep 11th, 2017 at 7:19pm

Has anyone noticed how good all the fruit and veg is at the moment, but also how cheap it is!!

To just name a few, big fat plump strawberries are 3 punnets for $4. Imperfect Mangoes are $3/kg

As much as I'm loving it, I'm worried if the farmers are making money!

I only buy produce from Harris Farm. I know the owner and I know how dedicated he is on selling Aussie.

The origin of every item is clearly shown.

Very lucky, we have 3 at our regular shopping locations.
Luke Harris is a top Nth Bondi bloke.

I reckon the imperfect picks section is now taking up 1/4 of the veg section, great for everyone.

I've always hated how all the fruit and veges look perfectly straight, round etc .

it's not natural and costs the farmer a fortune is fruit and vege's he can't sell. Give me a carrot with character any day

There is no Harris Farm where I shop but I wish there was.

I hate vegies that look plastic it just means to me that too many chemicals have been used to make them look like that.

Selling 'seconds' is a fantastic idea.

You dont have to worry about that with Aussie food.

We are pretty good.

Its good if you have a market for your seconds, it means the harder you grade your first grade, the better your second grade becomes.

At the end of my days as a grower, I just had one grade, I did not worry too much about cosmetics.
I did make sure it tasted great and did not break down.
people came from miles to get good produce, but so did the birds.

they do stretch their season though mike??>..peaches are a good one.. the best are all exported  so we get second grade.and then after a few weeks  they still look perfect  but thats where it ends.....

its disgusting they are allowed to see them....why they end up like they do...rot from the inside...

is because of how they are stored....and I hate it.. they need to put a picked by date on some of this fruit..

Yes Cods
Fruit can be over stored
As soon as a peach or nectarine goes into a coolstore it loses a big part of its flavour
We actually did taste panel trials on this
Markets and growers store fruit if there is an over supply
I wish I was back in the fruit game, I recon I could clean up selling good product direct

I bought 3 punnets of Strawberries for $6 and they weren't worth 6 cents.  White and tart and tasteless.  Horrible!  Really really horrible!

I also bought some Blueberries which were marginally better and had a slight taste but still a huge thumbs down.

I rarely buy Peaches now and even the Pears I bought last week had an 'off' flavour.

What a disappointment our fruit is now from the big supermarkets.  Looks great but it stops there.
