Downsizing the library
Sep 9th, 2017 at 2:55pm

I've made a start. I brought in a couple of boxes.
I'll start with the books I've not read yet.

I wish Jovial Monk was here. He's been through it and might give moral support because it's not easy deciding what you will part with.

I'm being ruthless here. I've filled two huge boxes already and I'm on to the third.
I'm throwing out books here I bought 2nd hand for $20-30-40 but what's the good of keeping them if I'm not going to read them again.
Better someone else gets a chance to read them.

It's the history books that hurt the most. I'd always hoped my grandson would have them but he's into science not history.

No.
I'm about done. I'm ditching heaps of stuff - Steinbeck, Huxley, Maugham, all of Dirk Bogarde's work, some Graham Green, heaps of history., all the crime like every Maigret novel
Five big plastic containers I've got now.

For those of you who haven't done this, let me tell you it leaves you desolate, nearly as bad as losing a pet. These books have been part of my life for 40 years or more.
But while I'm an emotional person I'm also a realist. I have realised things can't stay this way for a lot longer.

Culling them is one thing, disposing of them is another. I'd like to get some cash for them but it won't be much. One bookseller said I'd have to send him a list of the titles, authors, date of publication, condition.
Yeah right.

We tried - in vain - to dispose of mums 5 bookshelves of books. Some of them are from the 1800s. In the end we divided them up and we each have a couple boxes full. Also gave some to her grandchildren. Its impossible to get rid of the really old ones that relatives wrote and the ones we havent read yet and well any of them. Mum was a scientist so there is history and science there. Grandchildren will hopefully get some use from them.

Bogarde is gone Smithers.
His daughter logged on under his name and mentioned due to poor health, he won't be back and thanked the Forum.

I once sold off/gave away at least 10 boxes of books. Some signed by the author/authoress - which in hindsight, I should have kept at least.

Unless one has a big house with a big room to have wall to wall books to make one feel comfortable with one's own intellect. It's best to let them back out there for others to read.

Oh I hope Bogarde is okay or recovered? That was over 2 years ago he did that post about the books.

But yes, I am a book-a-holic too!

I have been going through them all recently, and re-arranging them.
Tall book shelves in the hallways, and then other bookshelves.

Gosh, and all the music books from my piano playing and teaching!

I know that people are not as interested in books like in past, because of the internet etc.

Remember Encyclopaedia Britannica?

Now it's Wikapaedia.

But I always say, maybe something will happen and our internet goes down, then books will be valued and sought after?

I cannot let go of the books, I just …. can't!  Embarrassed

I am trying however, to let go of other stuff to clear, all Tupperware out!
Chipped cups and plates out!
Certain clothing and shoes out!
And it is a good feeling.

So I am doing something.....but books....not just yet.

When travelling through QLD - i think it was around cardwell i found a "library" run by someone with a lot of books. What they did was anyone could take any books they wanted as long as they left the same amount of books there. That way the books went to good homes and the person got more books to read. Perhaps thats an idea for ppl with a lot of books?

I am in the process of moving house.
I'm seriously thinking of throwing out every book I have.
I never read them so what's the point ? -
they just take up valuable space.

Why? -
all the maths in my university books look like Chinese to me now.
I have other gardening books and things I have read
and probably will never read again.

A. if all you have are text books from your uni days, then you're even sadder than I thought
B. YOU said you never read them ... now you're saying you've already read them.  Cheesy

Make up your mind you idiot

Fool -
I said - I never read them (now).
Obviously I read them at least once and then put them in the bookshelf.
I used to use my French/English , English/French dictionary a lot
but now I just go to Google - it's much faster
and easier to read than the super fine print in the large book.

So you dont read much bobby?

I read books over and over - used to take about 10 years to forget a book but now its more like 5 so I get to read them even more.
