Depends on a lot of factors, ie: what you're after, how long you intend to stay, your budget, mod-cons you need, travelling alone or with a companion, male or female, how safe you want to be. If you want absolute safety then look at it on the internet, ..but mind that you have your surge protectors operating properly.
Personally, if there is no element of danger, discomfort, eye opening experience, human experience or wow factor, then I don't feel like I've travelled and I may as well stay at home and watch it in HD.
I like Europe a lot but it's so expensive. I've spend a few years now in Palawan, Philippines. It's been a real adventure here. Only now I've started to branch out to see some more of the Philippines, which has been really spectacular.
The touristy spots will always have you overpaying, but who cares if you're only there a short time. Just ignore anybody after big money or anybody trying to take you from the usual tourist route unless know what you're doing. English is widespread in the Philippines and the people are generally genuinely friendly. They are mostly catholic but often only go to church for free forgivenesses for their sins I think.
I also like diving. With over 7000 islands and so many reefs, there are more magnificent dive spots and island paradises here that I will ever get to experience.
My travels to other Asian countries are limited, but I'm sure there are many other amazing places to discover that don't get advertised.
