I'm going to somewhere in Asia next year and seeking recommendations?

Thoughts people? Must be safe.

Myanmar is fine, provided you don't stoke secessionist ambitions within any of the ethnic minorities.

Anyway, maybe try Laos or Vietnam. Thailand is a waste of time now.

Depends on a lot of factors, ie: what you're after, how long you intend to stay, your budget, mod-cons you need, travelling alone or with a companion, male or female, how safe you want to be.
If you want absolute safety then look at it on the internet, ..but mind that you have your surge protectors operating properly.

Personally, if there is no element of danger, discomfort, eye opening experience, human experience or wow factor, then I don't feel like I've travelled and I may as well stay at home and watch it in HD.

I like Europe a lot but it's so expensive. I've spend a few years now in Palawan, Philippines. It's been a real adventure here. Only now I've started to branch out to see some more of the Philippines, which has been really spectacular.

The touristy spots will always have you overpaying, but who cares if you're only there a short time. Just ignore anybody after big money or anybody trying to take you from the usual tourist route unless know what you're doing.
English is widespread in the Philippines and the people are generally genuinely friendly. They are mostly catholic but often only go to church for free forgivenesses for their sins I think.

I also like diving. With over 7000 islands and so many reefs, there are more magnificent dive spots and island paradises here that I will ever get to experience.

My travels to other Asian countries are limited, but I'm sure there are many other amazing places to discover that don't get advertised.

Friends just returned from Vietnam.
They had a great time, much to see and do.
The nation has made a good effort to attract tourism in the last 15 years and given it a national importance.
It's a country that is easy to route, being long and narrow - you just follow the 'trail' so to speak and see a lot either side along the way.
It is still relatively cheap in regards to Asian holidays and isn't a backwater of squalor or unorganised tours.
It is safe - unless you start mentioning the 'war'.

I personally wouldn't pick Asia for holidaying. But Vietnam would be a good part to visit without problems.
Japan - too expensive.
Thailand - a Brothel
China - too much paperwork, restrictions and not much freedom to visit things off the cuff.
S-Korea - no different than standing in 'any' city around the world.

Personally, I would rather go to New Zealand - one of the best 'Tourism' nations in the world.

AIMLESS EXTENTION OF KNOWLEDGE HOWEVER, WHICH IS WHAT I THINK YOU REALLY MEAN BY THE TERM 'CURIOSITY', IS MERELY INEFFICIENCY. I AM DESIGNED TO AVOID INEFFICIENCY.

Beware. If you are going for more than 6 months you may have to pay much more income tax for that year as they will class you as non resident, unless you are a homeowner.

Is there a clause for being a homeowner? What if you are renting out your house whilst you are away?
