It gives a mystical sound such as in the song Kashmir.

Page used many alternate tunings.

DADGAD

CACGCE

CFCFAF

DGDGBD

etc.

Tuning the guitar to open chords makes it much easier to play slide.

The drum sound was obtained by putting Bonhams kit down in a basement with a mike at the top of the stairs.
