Australia Day: Yarra Council to vote on local name change, cancelling citizenship ceremony in inner-Melbourne

An inner-Melbourne council will vote tonight on whether to stop referring to January 26 as Australia Day, and whether to replace the annual citizenship ceremony with an Indigenous smoking ceremony.

Councillors from the City of Yarra will decide on sweeping changes to the event to "acknowledge the loss of culture, language and identity felt by the Aboriginal community on January 26".

If passed, they could be the most extensive range of changes to Australia Day celebrations any council has undertaken.

City of Yarra Mayor Amanda Stone, a Greens councillor, said she consulted several Indigenous leaders before raising the potential for changes back in January.

"We've had discussions with the Indigenous community about the sense of loss and anger and sadness about not just the history, about what January 26 means to them," she said.

"Our officers have since been engaging with the Indigenous community and non-Indigenous people with random, on-the-spot surveys."

Cr Stone said ending all references to Australia Day was in line with what Indigenous communities had been telling her about taking "small steps".

"That was something that came through from the Aboriginal community really strongly," Cr Stone said.

"That associating January 26, which is a day that represents dispossession for them, with a day of national celebration is incongruous.
"So their strong desire is to engage in education rather than big bold steps."

The City of Yarra takes in the suburbs including Richmond, Carlton North, Collingwood and Fitzroy, where several Indigenous groups are based.

It is also home to large Australia Day celebrations, particularly in Fitzroy's Edinburgh Gardens.

Cr Stone said while she hoped the date of Australia Day would be changed, she did not expect celebrations within the council's areas to be significantly affected.

"I can't see that gathering will change in the short-term, but perhaps people will have more of a think about what Australia Day is and means on January 26," Cr Stone said.


The date of a public holiday, even a national holiday, is decided at the state level — so how would we go about changing the date of Australia Day?

"We don't have the authority to change the name. We don't have the authority to change the date.

"That's a big process. But we cannot refer to that date as Australia Day, which is a day that is associated with great loss and sadness in the community."

Cr Stone said neighbouring councils, including Darebin and Moreland, were considering similar changes.

"The City of Fremantle did something similar [late last year] but they created a different kind of celebration on a different day.

"What they haven't done is change their citizenship ceremony, which is a contentious point."

Sure lets get rid of Australia day because it upsets the boongs BUT lets also cut their welfare....it comes from the evil white man after all.

I don't celebrate Christmas or Easter. That does not mean that I don't stop other people from celebrating those days.

What has that got to do with Australia Day? Australia Day is about the foundation of Australia. Leave the aboriginal chainings to topics that have to do with aboriginal deprivation of liberty.

Settlers may have done that 200yrs ago. It wasnt very nice at all. So why do we have to still pay the price for their wrong doings 200+  years later?
Besides my ancestry is petty crims. My great great grandad stole a loaf of bread to feed his family. He was sent here to this new found land as a prisoner. He wasnt the one chaining these men. But, over time he and his new family and their kids and grandkids built this country into one of the safest, most pleasurable places on earth to live. Thats what i celebrate on Australia day.
I think the indigenous folk of today should feel proud that they have stood up and been recognised. They have a place in this land to keep their heritage and tradition. They are well looked after in todays society. I dont by the poor me attitude. They have just as much oportunity to make a good life as i and my family do.
Maybe if the japs got this place, or the arabs then just maybe the aboriginal may not exist today. Who knows.

Well, considering that the aborigines had not invented chains, and the picture was taken in black and white, and these aborigines are looking fit and healthy instead of fat or emaciated we would assume that white colonials or white Australians took the photo. Therefore, the aborigines featured were chained up by white people.

As far as my knowledge of aborigines go, they were mainly killed from introduced diseases. Even the common cold was enough to kill them. But I would assume that uncleanly conditions from a 6 month boat journey would have lead to people contracting much worse illnesses than the common cold.

Interesting facts were that the settlers of the first and second fleet were constantly robbed of food by aborigines. Many of the times, aborigines saw how poor condition the settlers were, that the aborigines would simply walk into camps and steal the food (and sometimes tools) of the settlers.

And if you are so interested, it was white colonials that prevented the eradication of aborigines. I am well aware that hunting parties were sent out to kill off scores of aborigines. And I am well aware that introduced diseases killed off 90% of aborigines. But if the 1901 government (and its earlier colonial government) did not provide for aborigines by the late 1800s, then the aborigines would be as extinct as the dodo bird.

Face it, had the successful governors and governments of the region pursued an ignore and self-defence policy against aborigines, aborigines would have died off long before the 21 century. They might not have made it to the 1940s.

On the whole, had Australia not been settled by the British or other European countries in the 18th century, you might well be seeing Indonesia claiming Australia. They would undoubtedly have little concern for the welfare of aborigines. Let us keep this all in perspective. Whilst you might bring pictures up of aborigines in chains, keep in mind the free handouts, the support and other things that descendants of these victims receive today seem to undo any sympathy I have for those who suffered. Their problems are now over.

We pay through constant harrasment of the situation. You seem to have tunnel vision on this subject and want to blow your trumpet and thats ok. Ive said what i believe.
I think you should hand them your house, your car, your life savings so you can feel good. Tell them your sorry every day for all i care but to be sorry you must first have done something your sorry for. I have not and I will not apologise for the actions of others. Also, these nasty actions of the rich settelers didnt just hapen to aboriginals, theyve just made enough noise to be recognised.

We in US celebrate Independence day when we got rid of British colonial rule and became independent sovereign country.
On the other hand Australia celebrate Independence day when became a Dependent British colony.
