The best instrument is the one that speaks to you on a creative level. It has to be an obsession, at the very least, or the instrument will end up in a closet or under the bed.

Wonder how many billions of dollars parents waste annually on musical instruments for their children?  Kids like the idea of being able to play but once the realization that it will take real work, the instrument is put aside.

The piano is the king of instruments.

( these days an electronic piano or keyboard can be more usable -
it's smaller, portable & always on pitch.)
It's also great for singers to use to easily find the right notes
& understand what other notes can also work in a song.
It helps people to understand the theory of music to
lead on to other instruments.
You don't have to be a great player to learn a lot from the piano.

After that you could learn the guitar then become the next Jimmy page.

hahahahhaha

but, yes the piano is very good.
The electric keyboards are quite cheap, good, light, portable.

I had one a while ago, it was good to learn on.

We agree.
I learnt some tricks for singing from the piano.
If you can't reach a note well you can find another note
on the piano that is 3 semitones up or down & it will fit in the song!
( it usually works & if not you can experiment to find another note that will work)
Singers generally can't work well or make a song without a piano to help them.

Hi Agnes - yes the piano is the ultimate instrument.
I actually like Latin rhythms on the piano.
Have you ever heard Ruben Gonzalez - the famous Cuban pianist?

I find the piano a bit staccato.
It is the 'precise' instrument, The standard you can use.

Does not 'flow', like a double bass does. Or a wind instrument does.

Yes - when I realised how difficult it was &
how much my fingers hurt even after 20 minutes -
I eventually gave up.
Still it was good to learn something about music.

Heroin

...

While technically not a musical instrument itself, heroin has made those who play music instruments sound a lot better at playing them.

Drugs have never made people play better or be more creative. They only made the user 'think' they were.
It is both a red-herring and short-cut approach.
If you can't make it - then fake it.
And that is what drugs do - help you to 'fake it'.

Piano if you have one. Otherwise start with a guitar.

Note that the piano hides what is going on from you. It is just a random bunch of black and white keys. So if you start with that put some effort into understanding the physics. A guitar lays it all bare for you.

Its interesting that you use KR as your example. I disagree that it made K's playing sound a lot better. I followed his career carefully and those he was parallel with. Keith never played a solo worth listening to, after his addiction took hold.
Its like coke in that there is an initial burst of enthusiasm and then the music goes to hell. Charlie Parker's addiction had a huge effect the development of Bebop but he soon lost his creativity. In the mean time, younger musicians started killing themselves trying to emulate him.

Drugs don't enhance anything. Its an illusion. In some cases, it takes years realise. But by then, they had pissed away their gift.

I learnt piano when I was a kid, as did my sisters. My father's side of the family were very musical and played all types of instruments, mostly "by ear" ... I have been able to get a tune out of most instruments.

Somehow I can not do anything with a guitar ... not sure whether I am left or right handed and I have tried, many times ... no "tune" and all I ever wanted to do was play something like this.

My daughter Played Trumpet from primary school and played in the High school stage band, They done an opening for the eisteddfod when she was in year 7, by year 8 she was no 1 trumpet. In year 9 she swapped to drums. She has a nice kit with some collector parts to it. Signature snare's (JoeyKramer) (Karl Palmer) and a Zildjian dark crash played by and signed by Brian Hitt.

At the moment I am messing around and mostly making horrible noises with a couple of mandolins but do a little better with Harmonica.

My Daughter also has a mid range keyboard, and some guitars. Great for scaring the cats.

I'm surprised I wrote so little last night -- considering I was up to my eyeballs in coffee.

My housemate is a tuba player in some band. I did not hear it all that often. But I would come home to find him playing some kind of song for rehearsal. The drug dealers across the way would refer to him as "tuba boy". I left the flat unlocked for a few minutes to go visit someone, and I returned to him giving me an earful about the potential of him losing thousands of $$$ in tuba equipment.
