If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, whom would you choose?

I would choose Leonardo da Vinci.

My father when he was younger.

I never knew him as a young man, just a nasty old bastard.

I would like to know how he turned out the way he did.

I was once asked this question in the form of who I would invite as guests at a dinner party. At the time, I was on the spot, slightly inebriated, and made some kind of glib answer, but I have thought about it on and off, ever since.

Its not an easy one for me to answer, because there are too many to reduce to one. Of course there are ancestors who still fascinate me, and I sort of know how things panned out. The trouble with choosing someone who is remembered in connection with famous events or remarkable achievements is that you end up being something like a verbal autograph hunter. And there is the chance they could be dull as ditch water.

For a start, we have to know where we are going to eat, because I don't want to cook. So if it going to be eating-out, the food has to be bloody marvelous but not expensive.

I am not going to invite a man, that's not my idea of a dinner date. So the one person I would choose would have to appreciate food and wine, and have something intriguing to tell.

Finally, taking one from a long list I choose, Mata Hari, in the flesh, of course. Madrid, 1916.

A Grandparent would be a good choice
as too would Mata Hari.

The 'character' and worldview [at that time] of those persons intrigues me.

Someone such as yourself would have no curiosity about the minds of such persons ?

Alexander the Great     around 356–323 BC
King David      around 1000 BC
Moses      around 1393-1273 BC

All powerful 'princes' of their times.

Another homosexual, so be careful the candles don't blow out while you're having dinner with him.

For myself ~ Douglas Murray would be interesting, and yes, I'd have to make sure the candles didn't blow out.

I've ALWAYS wished I was around in Jesus' time.

So...if I could have dinner with anyone it would be with Jesus Christ.

I'd like to have had dinner with Napoleon. I would ask him what he wanted for Europe and why he didn't quit when he was ahead.
But I suppose dinner would have been a few slices of saucisson in some muddy field somewhere on campaign.

As long as he cooked ....Marco Pierre White.
Preferably something he has slaughtered and butchered by his own hand.

I actually enjoyed his recent TV show here.. Hell's Kitchen Australia.

Much better than the other offerings.. it was informative and very interesting to see how Chef Marco got people who mostly hadn't cooked before, from diverse backgrounds, and through a process of some amazing calls on his part, welded them into an excellent team. Having spent many years in hospitality.. specifically kitchens and such, I think it was worth watching.

Hands  up for any  Black men who slept with white women, while their husbands were away fighting Asians?  Grin
Many of your posts refer to black men and your speculation about their sexual habits. Why is this?

That's the Media for you. Wink
No, its not the media. Its your posts.

Where do I get it from?
I get it from the Media and those that 'live by it'. It's the Media 'culture'.
Who knows - take Australia from the blacks, the blacks conquer the Media.  Grin

But hey, lets face it 90% of all Art/Mediums - both Modern and especially Historical. Depict the 'male' as being darker of appearance. Hence why marriage is done with the male being the Black Groom (Dominant Gene) and the female being the White Bride.

I just tell it as it is.

I dont recall black mens sex lives being discussed constantly in the media. You appear to have some sort of fixation. I dont really care about what you fantasise about but this forum shouldnt be a blog for your private desires.

Caesar, the thread started off well, and you'd think a simple dinner invitation was safe ground. But look what the twats have wrought of your interesting suggestion. There's no hope for the human race.

Well i wouldnt want to eat with anyone from the middle ages because i would die from food poisoning or worse. As for modern people i dont really want to eat with any of them. Maybe an author. Yes an author hmmm robert rankin or douglas adams would be fun. Heinlein would be creepy but interesting. Richard dawkins could be interesting. Definately not stephen king. Darwin or penrose maybe. I dunno. At the risk of sounding like aquascoot i would want to have dinner with someone i could learn from (or laugh with).

Well, if you really want to enjoy a good 'dinner'?
Then you would really pick someone with some Culinary connection.

Here is my Top 10 'Dinner' experiences

1. Neanderthals over a Mammoth BBQ kill celebration: imagine the 'growling' over huge chunks of delicious mouth watering juicy meat on big bones. Cooking fires everywhere and a woman in warm furs to go the other 'growl' with after. Oh yeah!!!  Wink

2. Joan of Arc. Well at least if the food was bad, at least 'eating her' out would be a virtuous experience.

3. Akkadian Ancient Feasts: The Spartans were Rural, the Athenians were City, but the Akkadians got 'Feasting' down to a fine art and supported the early start of a now accepted 'superior' Greek diet in the modern world. Imagine: Good quality food for ancient times and beautiful Greco-Hellas women in simple 'loose' garb.

4. Stephen Hawkings: reputed to have had the best straw-sucking Puree around

5. Any 'Billionaire' - obviously these people would have the most extensive, highest quality, most variety, complex and best cooked stuff going around, Breakfast, Lunch, Tea and all those other 'nibbles' in between. No 'restaurant' could offer better than what these people get served to them. Dolphin meat anyone?  Huh

6. Gordon Ramsey & Co: Ten of the most Media Popular Chefs/Cooks on TV. Imagine sitting down at a big table to eat with all these dudes!  Shocked Would they eat in silence, whinge or compliment??? Would they cook 'their own'?

7. The Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Now who wouldn't want to have dinner with a Mad Hatter and a talking Hare? Grin

8. The Last Supper: Yep, chewing the fat with Jesus and his Disciples while he accepted his fate at the hands of one of his 'jealous' co-conspirators.

9. Bear Gryles, Les Hiddens (Bush Tucker Man): Would make for an 'interesting' Menu or sorts. Camp fire going and the sound of crickets... Shocked

10. Ethiopia during the Great Famine: Yep - sitting down with a bowl of rice that has just been handed out to thousands of starving during the peak of the Famine that inspired 'Live Aid'. Imagine the 'raw' intensity of what it really means to have 'food', while surrounded by thousands of ...dying for it.

(11) Being in a lifeboat for 93 days adrift after the sinking of the Whaling Ship the Essex' and nibbling on the bones of fellow crew members.  Wink
