Are countries considered off beaten track?

I thought that more  applied to how far off an actual road you went.

went up a mountain track in the Romanian countryside years ago to look at a 50 000yr old glacier. Going up the mountain there were a few subsistence farms around, no other infrastructure to speak off ... about halfway up the mountain there appeared to be a little shop the size of a average WC.

I thought sweet, I'll grab a drink. When I went in there was the most gorgeous little 10 yr old girl sitting on a cut up log being used as a seat, a rough sawn timber slab (hand cut) across two other logs to make up a counter, and behind her was one small shelf on the wall with three items on it. That was the whole shop. I couldn't buy a drink as they didn't have any so I bought a can of beans. I had to buy something, I was probably the only customer she's had all month.

ohh, I did a couple of k's into a cave once ... again romania. To look at a cave bear skeleton

wankers in charge thought they'd be funny and turned the lights off on us. It was end of holiday season so my wife and I were the only ones in there. they were a little disappointed when I just sat down with my wife and waited them out. I think they expected me to start yelling out or something. Instead I pulled out a torch I had in my backpack and enjoyed the stalagmites by torchlight.

Yeah, they turned out the lights about half way down the salt mine I went in.

They DID give us warning, though.

This is one of the many rooms down the mine.

well done bojack ... That looks a little more hard core than anything I've done. I've just done the touristy stuff with boardwalks and paths already laid out for me.

Love the abseiling down the waterfall. Tried abseiling once, loved it. I want to do it again

Ditto.

I got some water splashed onto my shoe in the Polish salt mine, and I wasn't impressed.

As a small kid with my two brothers, father and mother, we camped overnight in a cave that was WAY in the backblocks of Northern China.

The one memorable moment that was burned into my memory was when my father flicked a burning butt out the entrance to the cave but it hit the back of my neck and slid down under the vest I was wearing ...  Grin Grin Grin

Jesus! Why am I laughing?

I have no memory of him rolling me onto my front and stamping the embers out ...  Tongue

We just had this years exercise on the weekend, went to Wiburds cave on the Sat, did a search in the cave as well as the extraction. Sunday involved heading to bottomless pit cave and abseiling the 50 metres to the bottom.

I can't go this year, but my plan for next year is to go to the big caves in Tasmania.

Also to do a bejessus load more canyoning. Kanangra main was my 1st and so far only canyon. When I tell people this, they get a bit of a shocked look, since Kanangra is regarded as one of the hardest ones in NSW

did that once while I was driving, shortly after getting my P's ... except I flicked the butt myself and the wind blew it back in and down the back of my shirt

I don't know how I didn't crash that day.

I don't recall the name of the cave now, it was a couple of years ago. I recall there was a rock formation in it that looked like a dragon.

Tourist caving or proper caving?

tourist ...

I think from memory theres a dragons throat in Temple of Baal or theres a dragon formation in the Nettle Cave. To be honest though we don't go close to those areas. The guides usually don't like the proper cavers in those areas, since tourists think all of a sudden they can follow us. I've been through Temple of Baal to get to Barralong which is a proper cave but apart from that haven't been in the tourist caves for years.

The main one is Mammoth. Its a good couple of kilometres north of the tourist caves. We stay up in a small cottage up on the hill and then walk down to it. At the moment theres about 10 kms worth of completely mapped passage, but the divers and others are pushing new passage all the time, currently thinking is theres about 20kms of passage

Well done.

In Australia the yellow grass plains south of Mt Isa that are cut by the Burke River, and various places in the uninhabited areas of  central and north central WA. I grew up on the far west coast of SA and did quite a bit of travelling north of the railway line into sandhill country where no roads exist with my grandfather who was a prospector among other things.
In Africa ... Kalahari desert in Botswana west of Maun ... crossed the amazingly colourful Namibian dessert from Windhoek to Cape Lodge, and jungles of the DRC.

Captain Obvious?

You're a Boofhead.

Have a look from 3.15 minutes.

Torrential rains suddenly burst upon the highlands while down below in the gullies the sun is shining and there's no hint of rain.

But then the watershed feeds all that mountainside rain into small ravines which lead into bigger ravines until it comes like a wall of water upon the naive and the ignorant down below where they're kayaking or hiking in the gully.

Check these out, Boofhead, this might save your miserable life one day.

Hmm?
Me thinks that 'off the beaten track' basically means something not travelled before ...by anyone.
Something rarely able to achieve these days.

Anyway. I've been up the Himalaya's. Got lost (didn't panic and hide right next to a major track near a village and live off Mars Bars  Roll Eyes ) and had to cross a mountain slide of rock and rubble that had just fallen 3 days earlier. Some locals were crossing, so I thought "what the hell" - it provided a short cut and had me come out ahead of the others I was travelling with. Kinda gnarly though as both I and the locals crossing the slide were always looking up with slightly worried looks.

Going 69m deep off Stoney Creek and getting totally 'narked' !
Penetrating the Lermontov Wreck in NZ.
Using the large Stormwater drains as a safe passage between suburbs in Mt Druitt. Wanna get to Emerton past the Letho boys - you gotta get deep down!

Diving solo off Port Lincoln and having 3 big Kingies side up to me for 'protection'. I got out asap!  Shocked

Various, goat-track 'trampings' around New Zealand.

Snuck into the Lodge with a mate (who went in further) during the Keating era. We lived a few doors down. 3 days later on front page of Daily Telegraph - pic of guards asleep   Lips Sealed
Some guy later bettered us and went for a swim in the Lodge pool during the Rudd era.

Used to sneak around the disused Power-Station at Pyrmont at night (keeping my cat-like prowling abilities up to scratch) - just recently rejected by Google as a possible new head office, etc.

Used to sneak around the old Erskine Park Quarry: ability to break into the 'kitchen' and drink their beers and eat their wonderful food, without actually 'breaking' anything to get in. Could even do it when Security was around (not giving up my secret here) and just 6 metres away.
They couldn't work out how I got into their Excavation vehicles and steal all their porn mags.  Grin

Being a male model and getting to change in 'uni-sex' changerooms with the females: definitely off-track!  Cool

Having my Cortina 'break down' 25kms outside of Broken Hill ...a long walk.

Being  stuck in Melbourne for 7 years and discovering that it is the same poo as Sydney but different smell. One is full of Asians, the other exists as part of Asia.  Tongue  Roll Eyes

I think getting my little Cortina bogged 25km out from Broken Hill was as about 'off-track' as I've been.
Unless I've got a suitable vehicle, I stick to dirt roads, tar roads, etc.
I have a 4x4 ute, but I just went along the fire trails to find 'free' camping spots. Well, not really 'camping' - just somewhere to toss a tent and sleep.

Going really rough 'out there' has never really appealed to me. Guess spending the day out there with many possibilities of something going wrong, just driving mostly - kinda seems tedious. I mean - there's not many spots in Australia worth seeing to go through so much effort.

Mt Hagen WHP Papua New Guinea.
Stayed there a year and a bit back in the 1970's.

The very first day I arrived, there was a "payback" beheading on the main highway through town.

Being so elevated, it wasn't as stiflingly hot as the coastal areas.

I remember the way the tins of powdered milk would have bulging aluminium seals owing to the lower air pressure. You had to puncture the aluminium carefully to avoid milk powder going everywhere.  Smiley

Unfortunately not. Masses of Chinese tourists have hit places like luang prabang, once my favourite place on the planet. Now Chinese bogans jump in front of the monks collecting alms for a selfie.

This was in a very remote area in Nth Laos in an area with nothing going on for tourists

There were  gangs of violent thugs even back then. Ironically, they call them "rascals" ... seemed to be a rather inadequate term to my western ears.

The "Westerners" lived in "compounds" ... security fences and alarm systems even back in the late 1970's.

Sadly, the Western culture has badly stuffed up the native way of life. It's like the Papuan people have adopted the very worst parts of Western "civilization".

Things were bad back then and I imagine it has only got worse over time.

Some things that come to mind, that I wonder why I got into that situation at all, was river rafting on what looked like bamboo strewn together, and with no life jacket, in some big river in Fiji.

Now I think of it, looking at the photo, none of that what we did 17 years ago would have passed safety. I do recall someone saying that none of those fijian chaps had any 1st aid training, and them long (skinny easy to rock) boats had no life jackets.
I won't ever do that again.

Last year, went to a monkey forest in Indonesia, hubby got pissed on by one cheeky monkey, I had a monkey bite my leg (lucky I had long slacks on, and it didn't break through the material).

I won't be doing that again either!

We used to camp off the beaten track in "The Pines" at Lake Bonnie Doon. Took about 2 hours to drive in, the middle of no freaking nowhere!

In Alaska, we went in a small plane (I hate small planes)....and went for a long flight over rugged mountains and fjords, and landed in one fjord for a while, it was so isolated and beautiful, the peace, the quality of the air was astounding.
I was just looking at the photos with hubby the other night of our Alaskan adventure, and the small plane photos clearly show me looking a bit freaked out, while hubby was smiling and pleased looking.
(Only found out later that another guest sitting in the front with the pilot, was also a pilot and built his own plane, which made the hubby feel more comfortable about the flight....pity I didn't know until after!!  Angry )

Went to Columbian Snowfields with an awesome big 6 wheeler truck. The tyers were as tall as my 5 ft height!
Tasted and drank some melting glacial water.

Did the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb about 6 years ago.

I did a plank walk on a cruise ship 2 years ago, with all these safety strapping on, but it was so windy, I couldn't do it, could not let go and just lean back at the edge over the ocean.

I would really love to go to Manchu Picchu.
Heights are okay for me (except small plane rides and plank walking on windy days!)

Alas, is nothing infested by Chinese -  with the lowest variation of genetic diversification?

They say, if you put a statue of a dirty Tasmanian Feral with dreads on a street corner - it gets rid of evil Chinese spirits.  Cheesy

Lots of Chink investment in Laos too.
Anyway back into the bush tomorrow for a coupla days, No phone, no lights, no motor cars, not a single luxury.
