How did it all go so wrong?

I was just looking through Youtube and rediscovered this one.

How did we go from that to the dross that pollutes our airwaves today?

I know there must be some diamonds out there, but so much dust to sort through.

I think I may post some more old ones

The rot set in in the late 80s and early 90s when music was created via copied and pasted electronic samples. 'House' music or 'tecno' was the beginning of the end. It's just pre-recorded electronic samples copied and pasted together, with a bit of singing over the top.

Popular music went bad when the rich got a hold of it. Most new bands are rich kids taking on rock as a career choice.

There is some truth to that^, but there have been, and still are, talented rich musicians.

Could we say its motivation that is the problem?

I may be naive with this notion, but was there a motivation to make good music in the past and now the motivation is simply to make money?

Yeah maybe, but there was a lot of garbage music around back then too. After 1959, Elvis went down the toilet. Bobby Vinton, Paul Anka, Cliff Richard, Petula Clark, Hermans Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Doors, the Monkeys, Don Mclean, they all stank, and there were plenty more where they came from. When I was in High School, I would go around and around the radio dial trying to find something that wasn't schlock. 60 to 64 were very lean years. 64 to 67 there was a burst of good stuff, but even the Beatles did some rubbish like Yellow Submarine and Obla di bla da. The Stones went over to Disco music about then. Whether we liked it or not, we were growing up and soon had kids of our own. It was over. Musicians with any integrity dropped out of the commercial scene and were content to produce edgier stuff.

I had to meet a friend at a night club recently and techno music was blaring through loud speakers.  It's not 'music' at all and I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

OMG it was hideous!

I think we have all been there.

I check what music is playing at a cafe before I will buy a coffee.

The young ones like switching off their brains and drowning out any thought process with a funk of loud music

I couple of other issues with popular  music. There's nowhere for young musos to play and the money has disappeared due to free internet downloads. Nobody buys cds anymore. Only 20 years ago they were nearly $30 a piece???? Now they rarely top $10.

I think it is more a case of the record companies teaming up with radio to take full control, for a long time the only way to be successful was to use the one formula that the establishment supported. Anyone who wasn't a clone of everyone else didn't get recorded and didn't get played.

Now while you will still mainly get garbage from the recording companies and on radio there is some wonderful stuff on the internet.
