Japan

I'm off to Japan for a couple of weeks in late September.
Anybody got any good tips on places to eat that won't cost 100 bucks a head in and around Tokyo, Kyoto or Okinawa?
Also good places for real coffee?
Any freebie sight seeing must sees other than the usual?

Be sure to buy a JR Rail Pass before you go.

The Tokyo-Edo Museum is worth seeing. Kyoto is full of places to see. I have never stayed there long enough. Was there in May and was surprised that fully half of everyone there was either from China, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong. Before it was 99% Japanese with a few white people mixed in. The number of whites hasn't seemed to changed. Japanese think Asians are ruining the place.

I know of a nice affordable place in Kyoto with meals included. Let me see if I can find the details ...

Speaking to a guy from NIHON yesterday.
I asked him what he thinks about white people calling his country 'Japan'?
He answered
"And they wonder why we never pay attention to them in regards to Whaling."

Yep - I can see why I wouldn't pay any attention to someone calling us Australians as "Gooney Goo Goos"

I'm only going to need a rail pass for Tokyo for a few days when I first arrive. I am going to go to Disneyland one of those days but then I will be in and out of Tokyo as I go to Okinawa for a few days then fly back to Tokyo before I go to Mt Fuji and Kyoto and Nara for a few days. I then fly back to Tokyo for just one night. So I was not sure if I should buy a rail pass or not. I've already paid for my tickets to Kyoto return on the bullet train.
I've already booked my accomodations for everywhere but I didn't include any meals in the bookings except for the trip to Mt Fuji and one day in Kyoto where we get lunches included.
I was thinking its probably cheaper and better to go to cafes for breakfasts and I'm not sure about dinners. Japanese pubs and or restaurants.

The best place I have ever eaten is Ueno Night Markets in Tokyo.

The place is exceptional, hundreds of bars and resturants all packed into an area 5 streets by 5 streets

Ah Japanese food, the only cuisine that smells worse entering the body than leaving the body.

Ate some weird stuff while I was there, and you aren't too far off in that assessment.  Smiley Smiley Smiley
