Deforestation
Jul 25th, 2017 at 4:54pm

Quote:
Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses. An estimated 18 million acres (7.3 million hectares) of forest, which is roughly the size of the country of Panama, are lost each year, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Some other statistics:

About half of the world's tropical forests have been cleared (FAO)
Forests currently cover about 30 percent of the world’s land mass (National Geographic)
Forest loss contributes between 6 percent and 12 percent of annual global carbon dioxide emissions (Nature Geoscience)
About 36 football fields worth of trees lost every minute (World Wildlife Fund (WWF))

https://www.livescience.com/27692-deforestation.html

As well as adding to CO2 emissions, not something we want, deforestation causes habitat loss leading to species approaching extinction, reducing biological diversity.

Some areas (Indonesia etc) patches of forest are burned to make way for palm oil trees.
https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2015/nov/11/indonesia-forest-fi... A forest fire in Indonesia due to an El Nino event exacerbating damage done by burning patches of forest for palm oil plantations.

The Amazon Basin is another area where forests are being destroyed to make way for food crops.

Others patches of forest are clearfelled for a quick profit.

If we want to act against Anthropogenic Global Warming then reafforestation and ending deforestation would be a good quick first move. Bamboo grows quicker than trees so could be mass planted initially.

Yeah, he did.

Told me I didn’t know what I was talking about re Fraudband, the copper was good yadda yadda. Now we see the HUGE mess the stupid Libs have made, how Australia is being held back by crap comms and broadband.

Then remember the libs BOUGHT the crap copper to run fraudband over. A world first! Other telcos ran out FTTN to sweat the last profit out of their (thicker and better maintained) copper but noooo, the Libs had to BUY a bunch of rotting copper that is too thin to roll out FTTN.
STUPID!

Fraudband is Fibre to the Node—the green boxes, usually but not always near a pillar.

HFC = Hybrid Fibre Coax, the pay TV cables, FoxTel and all that. Slows down heaps when connected to the NBN

FTTH = Fibre to the Home which I will have in southern Tassie. By then the CVC disaster should be fixed. CVC = Connectivity Virtual Circuit. RSPs buy this to resell to you. Unfortunately it costs too much, $15/mbps so to get a real, reliable 25mbps service your RSP needs to buy 25 x $15 = way too much. Hence all the probs with the crap the Libs have run out at vast expense that will never be recovered (need to cover $2Bn a year for copper etc maintenance and $1Bn a year for power for the nodes, replacing the batteries in the nodes every so many years etc.)

Bit off topic but roach and Lees are two of those who saw us saddled with this crap.

Yeah, in say 2000 and Telstra ran out FTTN over its own (magically thicker and well maintained) copper that would be OK. Not 15 years later and not over Telstra’s too thin and too corroded copper.

No, we need new technology.

Every year we get closer to a world food shortage crisis.

At the moment we can produce an abundance of food.

But no one notices a food shortage until they are hungry and there is no food, so we will be ambushed by the food shortage in the future.

We are on a treadmill that we cant get off, if you start diverting water from food production to "other" purposes, the crisis will come sooner.

If for instance you planted squillions of trees in the Murray Darling Basin as I think the Wilted Greens wanted to,,,, you would severely reduce river flows, and crop production would crash.

World food shortage will be a third world problem, as wealthy nations will outbid poor nations for food.
If it becomes a military problem not a matter of commerce then we will all go hungry.
Except for China who are planning already for food shortages,,,, they learnt their lesson from history
