Postal ballot for SSM?
Jul 23rd, 2017 at 2:56pm

Huh?

Link.

Quote:
Senior Federal Government conservative Peter Dutton has called for a national postal vote on whether to legalise same-sex marriage.
Key points:

The Coalition is adamant there will not be a vote in Parliament on the issue until a plebiscite is held.

Its plan for a $180 million in-person same-sex marriage ballot was thwarted by senators from Labor, Greens and the Nick Xenophon Team last year.

Mr Dutton said there was momentum to settle the issue "one way or the other" before the next election.

"The plebiscite proper can't get through the Senate," he told Sky News.

"From that point, what's the next best option? In my mind it is a postal plebiscite, which allows the public to have their say.

Far cough Dutton.  Either do what you took to the election which is a plebiscite, or have a vote in Parliament on appropriate legislation like you are bloody paid to do.

There will be no credibility unless there is a proper plebiscite held on this issue.

Just have a vote in Parliament. The Irish referendum campaign on marriage equality was very bitter and divisive. We don’t need that here.

What is the point of a plebiscite if it is non-binding on politicians.
A very expensive opinion poll then.
(There are many opinion polls out there now).

Yes, we do - these issues need to be aired openly and fairly to all sides.... how else are the wishes of people to be known?  If it's bitter and divisive, then perhaps it was better left alone in the first place..... but then again, it may ramp up the revolutionary spirit of those who feel badly done by in such a vote.... and since this nation needs massive change..... the enemy of my enemy etc..... all grist for the mill....

I can think of a few other issues that need to be equally publicly aired, and may well be bitter and divisive....

Good point - the politicians MUST be bound by the will of the people... they've been operating out there without any civilised constraint for far too long in their delusion that they 'rule' the people of this nation and are not stewards** of it for those people.

**the Stewarts of Scotland were essentially stewards of the crown, and not its holders... but the 'election' process is somewhat different up there from that of England..... same as the Irish system, in which the best is elected and the right to kingship does not automatically follow on to the oldest son or possibly daughter.

My first suspicion about the postal vote is that a  lot of anti-SSM pollies like Christensen were for it.

You don't need a pleb for that. A conscience vote will suffice and it won't cost $50m.
You contact your local mp and make you case. He votes the way the majority of his constituents vote.
the problem arises when MP's put the parties needs or the donors wishes ahead of that of his constituents.

John Howard changed the Marriage Act without a plebiscite.

Thus, his change has no credibility.

And so it is.

Ah, but he changed the legislation to something Grendfel agreed with.

it always seems to go under the radar....its a shambles as it is...
