No, it is the rich getting too much money at the expense of the 80% on lower incomes.

That is why the Budget is in deficit with debt heading rapidly to $1Trn. Neoconservatism is draining money from the bottom 80–90%.

Swag has it exactly the wrong way out. Doubt he has the ability to learn and to see that. Shouting slogans is more his strength.

The budget is in deficit because govt spends more than it earns and productivity cannot keep up.

The 'rich' that you chide pay for the vast majority of govt expenditure and statistically their share has been increasing not decreasing.

20% pay 71% of income tax

The rich are overpayed idiots!

So an unproven idea that "zero progressive taxation" works.

Whether it works or not doesn't mean it's right or wrong.

The enslavement of minorities has always occurred, whether it's achieved by the point of a sword, gun or ballot box it matters not.

51% of people can effectively vote to enslave the other 49%

Hence progressive taxation is the rule of law, enshrined by the majority on a minority.  A law that legalises the theft of money from a minority because that minority will never control government.

The majority can legalise anything they want.  That is why lots of societies have bills of rights, to protect minorities from majorities.

Huh

I didn't argue for people voting for or against "progressive taxation".  What we can't agree is whether your idea of progressive taxation is slavery.  You keep making it a "statement" when really it is an "opinion" of which few (other than Joe Hockey) supports.

You belittle and lessen the meaning of the word "slavery" - that those in history who were indentured, or kept under inhumane conditions are equivalent to you and your first world lifestyle.

Perhaps you mean to say that progressive taxation is "unfair".  Well, there's a who debatepedia on this.  And it does look a grim society - perhaps which is why no serious person thinks a society will remove it.

We need a French revolution:

Populist revolutions without any framework as to what will replace the current system have a bad habit of leading to societal disarray, often resulting in a leader with near absolute power or a tyrant taking power. Refer to the French Revolution, the Russian February 1917 revolution, the Arab Spring, etc.

I believe that my question to you was....

Swagman wrote on Jul 14th, 2017 at 12:12pm:
...so what's your understanding of 'real' slavery?

I'm not discussing fairness or unfairness due to the fact that being fair or unfair is immaterial.

Yes progressive taxation is 'fair' from a community perspective, and from the perspective of low income earners and consenting high income earners.  That is why it's the staple tax system of most societies...........doesn't actually make it fair on the individual being robbed of his hard earned......doesn't make it right.

Mind you so-called 'Democratic' societies have also tolerated 'traditional' slavery, for example, the pre-civil war US.  The majority of people thought it was perfectly ok to enslave black people, so they did.......didn't actually make it fair on the individual being robbed of their liberty......didn't make it right.

 Huh

Swag certainly have unusual thoughts.  Thought to majority of people no doubt considered twisted or just plain wrong.  Just to make him feel better, let's just call it a difference of opinions.  Though more likely Swag just plain wrong.
