A CRUSHED koala has been found in a logged forest, after the Victorian government failed to follow the advice of its own scientific committee to protect the environment, which is also home to the endangered Greater Glider.

The Sunday Age has published pictures of the lifeless animal, taken in the logged Acheron Valley, near Warburton, northeast of Melbourne.

The newspaper has reported Labor Premier Daniel Andrews’ government is now carrying out a department investigation into the koala death, and VicForests has vowed to carry out its own inquiry once it had obtained full details.

“If this is one of our operations, we deeply regret that this occurred,” VicForests acting chief executive Nathan Trushell was quoted as saying yesterday.

The grisly find has renewed calls for the Victorian Premier to create a Great Forest National Park to reduce the alleged deaths of native animals and environment.

Logging in the Acheron Valley was permitted despite advice the government’s own scientific committee last November recommending greater protection of the area’s Greater Gliders, which in May were listed as a threatened species on the path to extinction.

The Sunday Age reported this advice was rejected by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

they then have an investigation into the death of an animal their own advisors warned them needed protection..
