The Butterfly Forest has begun
Jun 22nd, 2017 at 11:42pm

We started putting in our new garden last weekend.

It's called
'The Butterfly Forest.'

All the months of planning is paying off.
The path is right, colours are contrasting well.
We have blue eyes and daisies bordering the paths .
There are about 25 more butterfly attracting plants to be put in .

I have one too and mine attracts hummingbirds and all kinds of bees as well. In fact, that has been the theme of most of the gardening I have done in this house so I am surrounded by it on all sides.

A woman just an hour or so ago as I was out gardening between rain showers slowed down and told me she would try to get the Garden Club to give me an award Smiley

Yes, but they are all growed up and live a way away.

As it happened, about 10 of the local Samoan kids helped my move 5M3 of mulch.

The Samoans are lovely people. I have known them all for about 8 years.

It was a lot of fun with the kids. We all had ice creams.

Did you get that cypress mulch I suggested Sprint? Mine doesn't wash away. Doesn't rot. And weeds can't penetrate it.

yes I did thanks.
Got the cypress bark chip.
Lovely colour and smell.
The path is earth covered in sugar cane mulch.
So the contrast is glorious.

thanks very much

I should get my first 12 trees delivered next month, 8 cider apple trees and 4 cherry trees, including a sour preserving cherry.

I plan a hedgerow around the area of bay trees, rosemary (the blue flowers attract bees and the woody stumps make a great smoke for smoking meat) raspberries, seedless blackberries and blueberries plus native Tasmanian berries etc and semi wooden herbs like sage and oregano etc. The hedgerow will attract birds and insects that control insect pests. The hedgerow will also be a windbreak.

I am going to build a covered atrium attached to the house, kind of like a greenhouse and will plant a lemon and a lime tree in it.

Should all look nice with grass verges etc.

Chooks will give eggs and control codling moth.

Thanks mechanic.

Part of the planning was to amend the soil.
Test the soil for pH. Calculate how much fertiliser to use when it will be dug into the soil. Not just added topically.
You can use more fertiliser when it is dug in, as compared when used topically. A lot more.

We put measured amounts of fertiliser on the then grassed area that was to be turned into The Butterfly Forest.

Hired a cultivator and dug up the grass while mixing the fertiliser in well.

Marked out the path.
Put 'AIAs' recommended Cypress mulch where the path was not.
Put Sugar cane mulch where the path was to be.

We have been many months collecting plants.
They were bought as root stock and have grown while waiting their new home to be built.

Lifted existing ferns, daisies, blue eyes, herbs. They are all mainly replanted.

I am very pleased.

The local birds already love it.
