I moved to the south west in 2005 with the intention of only staying until a project was completed , 12 years later I am still here , ready to move some bigger acreage and having a go at going off grid altogether

Try the Mid North Coast.  Lot of trees, acres, nice people and awesome beaches.  I lived there for 10 years and still miss it.

Don't be fooled into thinking you will have privacy though.  You get more privacy in the big smoke.

There's a famous event on the river every year: the Avon Descent.

Coming up soon.

What's the minimum size cleared area where you could keep enough animals to keep the freezer full?

Define 'enough animals' and how much meat does your family eat in order to fill a freezer for how long?

I saw a place for sale with a creek running thru it. Would you be allowed to put a hydro wheel in it?

Just the normal amount of meat a family of 4 hungry savages would go thru Smiley

We had 300 acres but only about 5 were cleared and I wouldn't think that would be near enough to keep animals to fill a freezer for a family of four.

I had 2 horses but always supplemented their feed.

5 acres of cleared is what I was thinking, so that would be enough to provide a good deal of the meat but not all.

Lots of cattle grazing land up there and you can buy a cow and have it done for you ready to put in the freezer.

ive been lucky enough to have a great city place and a great place in the bush.

SBS are doing some filming on my place for an upcoming series on a 12 yo aboriginal girl with spiritual powers .

the series is called "grace beside me".

we have plenty of echidnas . the dogs get spiked because they try to get at them but the echidna grips the ground so hard this is a total impossibility

we have a pair of wedge tails that nest on our place too. they are magnificent birds.

the platypus only come out at dusk and are very camera shy. i dont like their chances of getting them in frame.

certainly tree change is a better option for me.

my brother moved to the gold coast and his neighbours house is a rental and there are often people partying til the wee hours.  as you get older, you appreciate a bit of peace and quiet.
i would still say that living on a big acreage where you cannot see any other neighbours can be a bit unsettling . it takes quite a bit of getting used to. i dont think a lot of city folk would feel rested by being on a big isolated acreage. in fact, i think a lot would find the experience unnerving

I'd take a week to adjust  I reckon as I've deliberately put myself way out of my comfort zone several times in my life.

My target place is 5 acres 15mins from Burliegh Heads, so still moments away from a latte and smashed avo on sourdough ; )

Oh wow... that's excellent scoot... I've met some real knowledgeable aboriginal people and they are fascinating....

Wedgetail Eagle 🦅 are one of my favourite all time Birds... live seeing them circling while traveling in the outback....

I always toot my horn when I see them on the road feasting on a dead kangaroo so that they have time to get out of the way 🙂

I looked at moving out of town some time ago onto 2.5 acres but in the end stayed where I am on top of a river in town...

I'm glad I did too... as time went on and others built in the same spot you had less privacy than in town due to the wire fences ... you'd walk out your door looking straight at your neighbors 😳

So 5 acres would be a minimum

gordon,

you'd be looking at tallebudgera valley or the springbrook spur i would imagine.  both are fairly pricey .
you really need to decide if you want a good view or not. i would go up springbrook ridge.
its very private.
i find the tallebudgera valley very wet, gets very little sun in winter, and has a bit of a brooding feel about it.

mt tamborine has plenty of amazing places with great veiws and is much cheaper but the drive is further

certainly tree change is a better option for me.

my brother moved to the gold coast and his neighbours house is a rental and there are often people partying til the wee hours.  as you get older, you appreciate a bit of peace and quiet.
i would still say that living on a big acreage where you cannot see any other neighbours can be a bit unsettling . it takes quite a bit of getting used to. i dont think a lot of city folk would feel rested by being on a big isolated acreage. in fact, i think a lot would find the experience unnerving

Oh wow... that's excellent scoot... I've met some real knowledgeable aboriginal people and they are fascinating....

Wedgetail Eagle 🦅 are one of my favourite all time Birds... live seeing them circling while traveling in the outback....

I always toot my horn when I see them on the road feasting on a dead kangaroo so that they have time to get out of the way 🙂

for you mechanic

ive been lucky enough to have a great city place and a great place in the bush.

SBS are doing some filming on my place for an upcoming series on a 12 yo aboriginal girl with spiritual powers .

the series is called "grace beside me".

should be interesting to meet a few of the film makers

Will Mr Scoot be making a cameo?

i will be meeting some of the local elders so that will be interesting.
i am lucky enough to have 3 platypuses on my block and they have offered them a role

Platypuses are the most captivating creature I have seen

Plover chicks are pretty good too.

we have plenty of echidnas . the dogs get spiked because they try to get at them but the echidna grips the ground so hard this is a total impossibility

we have a pair of wedge tails that nest on our place too. they are magnificent birds.

the platypus only come out at dusk and are very camera shy. i dont like their chances of getting them in frame.

I'd take a week to adjust  I reckon as I've deliberately put myself way out of my comfort zone several times in my life.

My target place is 5 acres 15mins from Burliegh Heads, so still moments away from a latte and smashed avo on sourdough ; )

gordon,

you'd be looking at tallebudgera valley or the springbrook spur i would imagine.  both are fairly pricey .
you really need to decide if you want a good view or not. i would go up springbrook ridge.
its very private.
i find the tallebudgera valley very wet, gets very little sun in winter, and has a bit of a brooding feel about it.

mt tamborine has plenty of amazing places with great veiws and is much cheaper but the drive is further

Price from the point of view of a Sydney owner, it looks cheap as chips.
With two young kid the most vital thing for me is proximity to good schools and activities, and the beach of course.

I can see how Tallebudgera could have some deep afternoon shadows, but it also looks big enough that careful site selection could help.

BTW which part of the GC is your brother and his next door party house?
