It's still complete bullshit.

An ethnic couple can arrive here at the grand age of 50 ... be on the dole for God knows how long because of their age and no skills ... and then come 65 they're both on Easy Street for the rest of their lives ... and God knows some of these Third Worlders live longer than Methuselah.

Sorry Herb .... plenty of Poms have done the same.

How about silly old Aussie diggers marrying 25 to 30 year old Asians/Philipinas etc.

Dying ... and these young brides get a War Widows service pension for the rest of their lives ....

and some of them live back in their countries of origin.

Damn right. Good point.

This so-called 'toughening up' on immigrant rorting is complete bullshit which doesn't go nearly far enough.

If Turnbull is trying to appeal to the conservatives with a view to the next election, then he's taken us for mugs.

'Mediterranean back' is still very much with us out there in the suburbs.

it depends how long you worked and paid taxes...

I do believe you should contribute before you get any form of pension..

.like we see when these  so called brides...come here last about 3 months return to whence they came  then when the groom carks it   they claim widowhood... and get it.. never doing a days work here.. wrong wrong wrong..

too little too late.

You should have to be employed for more than 10 years to even get the dole.
You should have to have worked and paid taxes for 30 years to get a pension.
The pension should increase for every 10 additional years you work and pay taxes.

The system at the moment is skewed to give to the lazy and punish the workers.

Its broke and desperately needs to be fixed.

Reward the workers, make the lazy work and STOP GIVING MONEY TO FOREIGNERS WHO HAVE NEVER CONTRIBUTED.

I agree.

For starters, let's take back the money we gave this useless foreigner.

...

Then, deport him back to his home country.

He still has British citizenship, so there are no problem.

You know very little about how to migrate to australia, dont you. Its ok to admit it, we all already know it, and you denying it just makes you look reallllllllllly dense.

Here, I will help you out a bit, cos its clear that you are lacking in the basic maths department. If someone gets on the dole at age 50, then retires and moves to the pension at age 65, that would be 15 years on the dole. 65 minus 50 is 15. Still with me? Ok good. Let me know if that was too advanced and I can try to slow it down a bit for you.

You are the first person I have heard describe living on ~$680 a fornight as "easy st". Given the current uproar about how little old age pensioners get, why do you think they are on easy st, and do you advocate for making the aged pension less?

Stupid idea to take pensions off people after six weeks overseas.  It's your pension, you can do what you like with it, so enough of this Big Bully Daddy business..

At least they get a pension.

Those of us who have worked hard and saved all our lives are punished by not giving us anything, no benifits, no reward just expected to suck it up and give to the lazy parasites that pissed all their mony up the wall.

Ok, so there are some misconceptions in this post that I feel need clearing up.

Its great that you managed to save up enough money to fund your own retirement. Congratulations, you literally hit the jackpot and are one of the wealthiest people in the world, we are talking top 5% of all humans alive. To complain that this is a bad thing is pretty damn amusing. If you want, you can gift some to me tax free and that will lower your asset test and make you eligible for the pension. Would you like to do that? No, didnt think so.

(1) Currently, if you own your own home, are single (and lets face it, who could actually stand living with someone who is such a whinger that they complain about being one of the richest people in the world) and have more than about $550,000 in assets, you are not eligible for an aged pension. This does not include your primary residence. Thats a lot of money. Thats more money than most people see in their life times and you are complaining about it. Please, get some smacking perspective.

(2) The aged pension is there to help people who need it. If you have that much money, you dont need the help.

(3) Chances are you benefited greatly by the social order and amenities that being an Australian citizen provides. You were safe in your bed, protected by the police and the fire service, knowing that noone was going to bomb you and your house wouldnt fall down around your ears. That was your benefit and reward. Plus there is the whole health care thing that you most definitely take for granted.

(4) Are you calling everyone who works lower paid jobs lazy parasites? Do you honestly think that some poor school janitor works less hard than some asshole banker who sits behind a desk all day? (hint - no, its just that society has placed different values on their respective jobs) How about a mum who cares after their disabled child because noone else will? Are they a useless parasite? What if someone works really really hard, but gives their money away to people who they feel deserve it more?

I kind of sympathize for people on a pension wanting to live overseas. Australia is such an overrated ripoff cost of living society which literally steals money from people. I  can get a 1 to 3 exchange rate in Malaysia and employ a house maid for the equivalent of $300 AUD a month so why would anyone want to stay in Australia and give all of their pension away to some liberal voting opportunist who runs a nursing home  ?

When do these new rules come into effect ?

I know someone who is eligible for a pension in December. Will they be affected if the legislation goes through in August ??
