Labor takes Qld into massive debt
Jun 14th, 2017 at 8:18am

As predicted Labor would bloat the debt in Qld and achieve very little. Except ADANI which is almost there.

Pauline must be watching in awe of running Qld her home state.

Qld govt falls short of 'bonanza' budget

VIDEO: Queensland budget’s biggest losers

Queensland's Labor government has handed down a big-spending budget ahead of the upcoming state election, however its far from the "jobs bonanza" promised.

The minority Palaszczuk government had talked up an employment focus in the lead-up to Tuesday's release, and the measures outlined promise to "support" 40,000 jobs.

But Treasurer Curtis Pitt - who last week distanced himself from the "bonanza" tag Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had spruiked - couldn't guarantee the unemployment rate would drop below six per cent in the next few years.

"We are not going to do what the previous government did, promise unemployment would reduce to four per cent and then not deliver," he said on Tuesday.

"We're serious about job creation, the programs here are working."

Opposition leader Tim Nicholls said Labor had broken its jobs promise.

"This is a budget that is a con job that has been propagated by Labor, it won't deliver the jobs, it won't deliver the infrastructure, and Queenslanders will be worse off as a result," he said.

The budget features a small surplus of $146 million for 2017/18, after posting a massive $2.8 billion surplus for the previous year, due to an unexpected increase in mining royalties.

The surplus would have been $389 million for 2017/18 however the $1.1 billion dollar hit to the state's bottom line from Cyclone Debbie reeled it in further.

The government's signature infrastructure project was Cross River Rail, with the state to provide an initial $1.95 billion on top of the $850 million it has previously allocated, with a promise to meet the full $5.4 billion cost in future budgets.

The funding means Cross River Rail can begin work by the end of the year, but the government said it "remains open" to federal funding of the project, after a long running funding fight with the Commonwealth.

Its focus on a Brisbane River crossing - labelled the "state's No.1 infrastracture project" - incensed the crossbench, made up of regional MPs including the two from Katter's Australia Party.

Four of the five crossbenchers have threatened to block the budget unless their own projects and policies are rubber-stamped by the government.

But the Liberal National Party has refused to stand with them, despite its own concerns, so the budget is likely to pass the house.

The biggest allocations to individual sectors were the $16.6 billion health budget and $13.7 billion for education and training.

Regional infrastructure gets a boost with a two-year allocation of $200 million dollars for the Works for Queensland program, designed to get local people into jobs.

The minority government, facing an election before May next year, but more likely in November, has extended the $20,000 first home owners grant by six months as part of its broader housing initiative.

The focus on regional employment along with large job-generating infrastructure projects comes as the government looks forward to the state election.

Labor has bought QLD the biggest suplus in a decade .... and even after all the infrastructure spending Palaszczuk announced last night, will continue to bring a surplus.

The only debt is the one yuliars head.

The government of south east Queensland will spend more on one single project in brisbane, to ensure their unemployment does not go above 4%, that they will spend in the rest of Queensland.

And it is our mining royalties earned in the north and central Queensland that goes to pay for it.

They will be gone soon enough.  Angry Angry Angry

Nah.  There is a multi billion dollar debt.  The budget produces a (to use an analogy ~ trading profit) surplus but does not reduce debt.

Fkk you are as dumb as dog sh1t, it's like you have no idea about anything to do with QLD in any shape or form

Queensland's debt is still on track to hit almost $80 billion within four years.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt's mid-year economic statement on Tuesday showed the Government will cut total debt from $75.2 billion in 2014-15 to $73.9 billion this financial year.

However, total debt is still set to march towards a figure of $79.7 billion in 2018-19.

I see there's serious political consideration of bidding for the olympic games to be held in brisbane. Sorry, but it's such a dumb idea it could only come from the febrile mind of a narcissistic politician. We are broke! And even if we had the money, there's much more important things to spend the money on.
