But brilliant, on the subject of God ?

More, it was just a 'nailing his breeches to the mast' type of public statement, of his conviction that there is no God.

And circa 2017 ?

Tim Minchin was simply reflecting a populist view [confirming the popularity of atheism], which is prevalent today, within almost all 'Christian' societies.

Nothing 'extraordinary', in saying/expressing something like that.
