1970s was the golden age of terrorism
May 24th, 2017 at 9:39pm

There was a plethora of terrorist groups in the 1970s.

The major difference between 1970s and the current time is that explosives in the current age appear to be more powerful, the use of vehicles, and the use of car bombs.

Yes, and there was even a Jewish terrorist group.

Some of the 1970s groups were.

The IRA
The red army faction (Japan)
The Weather Underground (USA)
Symbionese Liberation Army (USA)
Ku Klux Klan (USA)
The Jewish Defense League, a right-wing religious organization, launched 44 bombings and assaults (USA)
The Black Panthers (USA)
Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional, (Puerto Rican group in USA)
Baader-Meinhof Group (renamed Red Army Faction, defunct as of 1998) (Germany)
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)
Red Brigades (Italy)
Revolutionary Struggle (Greece)
Shining Path (Peru)
Apologies if I have missed some.

http://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/28/opinions/bergen-1970s-terrorism/

Quote:
... In fact, the real Golden Age of terrorism in the United States was during the '70s, not in the post-9/11 world. Consider that terrorism in the United States was then a quite common feature of life: There were literally hundreds of terrorist bombings, shootings and hijackings in States during the 1970s. In the 14 years since 9/11 there have been by contrast only some two-dozen terrorist attacks in the United States perpetrated by a mix of jihadist terrorists, neo-Nazis, violent racists and anti-government militants, according to a count by New America.

During the decade of the 1970s terrorists killed 184 people in the States and injured more than 600 others. In the decade and a half since 9/11, terrorists have, by contrast, killed 74.

Between 1970 and 1979 nationalist and ethnic terrorists, religious zealots, and anti-war militants frequently attacked American targets. Terrorist attacks typically consisted of bombings of civilian targets in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington that were also interspersed with shooting sprees aimed at the police...

... The U.S. Department of Transportation found that between 1970 and 1979 there were 112 domestic plane hijackings. While those numbers didn't differentiate between simple criminal hijackings and those committed for political purposes, hijackings were quite common during the 1970s, but since then they have virtually disappeared...

So are we moving into warfare now? The US military isn't the only one guilty of that.

I am highlighting what the West say we have....something about a War on Terror.

Plenty of children were killed by the Vietcong and NVA.

All of those groups in the OP have an objective, something tangible.

Why does Islamic state do what they do?

And the Germans shouldn't have bombed the s hit out of London and Stalingrad. You are right though, military tyrants have played a part in all of this terrorism rubbish. But they aren't the total blame. Stupid religion is the main culprit.

we aren't radical muslims, we have more money , better countries, we are mostly white, we use democracy, meddling in their affairs, fighting their soldiers, they think we are immoral due to homosexuality etc. There's loads of reasons.

It's more than the Iraq War and military meddling Mothra. There's an ethnic, tribal and sectarian aspect to this who thing which goes back a long way. That part of the world is a big basket case of different groups that hate each others guts and because of the power shift caused by the Iraq war (amongst other things) these groups are scurrying for territory and power.

An overly simplistic answer but let's work with it.

Why do you think they hate us, Hammer?
we aren't radical muslims, we have more money , better countries, we are mostly white, we use democracy, meddling in their affairs, fighting their soldiers, they think we are immoral due to homosexuality etc. There's loads of reasons.

Its the constant cycle of deaths initiated from the Iraq invasion that is fuelling hate.

The USA glorifies the killing of Muslims and Arabs in TV shows and movies, and the US public is generally hostile to Arabs and at the very least, negative toward, and suspicious of Muslims.

It is not possible to continually be killing people and expect no reaction.

ISIS kicked off in Iraq because USA invaded, displaced Sunnis from power and then excluded Sunnis from the economy and society. Hundreds of thousands were kicked out of the army and police. Millions of Sunnis were removed from their public service jobs.

The Americans hunted down Sunnis and arrested and killed them. Iraqi Sunnis had 4 choices: fight, run, get disappeared in Abu Ghraib, get killed.

The Saudis next door to Iraq were quite prepared to arm and finance Sunni insurgency.

Compared to the lives they had before 2003, Iraqi Sunnis live terribly in squalor and are resentful to the extent that it creates a fertile ground for rebellion and ISIS recruitment.

The debacle in Syria would not have happened if Iraq had not been invaded.

The whole Middle East is a disaster zone because of the actions of Bush and Blair.

Furthermore, Africa is starting to fall apart as well with growing insurgencies in a number of countries.

Its the cycle of death and the hate that it creates.

The promotion of Islamophobia as practised by many bigots on Ozpolitic feeds ISIS agenda as it makes Muslims targets of victimization.

Hammer, do you think actions like this:

US-led coalition air strike in Syria kills more than 30 people in school near Isis-held Raqqa, says human rights watchdog

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/s-coalition-syria-air-strike...

... might inspire hatred?

Germany killed 20 million Russians while Japan killed 10 million Chinese alone. Plus all the other millions of people these 2 armies killed. I wouldn't go sticking up for Germany or Japan.

ISIS being inspired by hatred because of atrocities from the US?? That's a laugh. Look at what they did.

That does not justify the fire bombing of Dresden which cost hundreds of thousands of lives. It was a war crime.

There is the difference. In most occasions kids are killed accidently in war. It's not intentional. ISIS are killing kids, the US are killing kids as are the Iraqi Army. ISIS are targeting kids intentionally.

North Korea are threatening the US with nuclear attack. Plus threatening to invade South Korea. I don't totally and blindly follow our side. The Vietnam War doesn't sit right with me. Nor does the Iraq War and Afghanistan. WW2 does though.

Accidentally? As in whoops, we meant to miss the kids when we bombed that school?

And we never meant kids to get cancer from depleted uranium shells.

Those kinds of accidents?

ISIS like to shoot and fire rockets from houses with civilians inside. What do you expect the armies fighting ISIS to do. Not fire back?? I can't comment on the depleted uranium part of your post because I'm unsure if it's true.

Nope. Think along the lines of cause and effect.

Listen to yourself. You've been a long time advocate of stopping violence against women, but now you're making excuses by saying they deserved it because 'we started it'. How does that reasoning go down in domestic violence? Violence is okay if it was done to you first? Since when the f**k have you argued that? There was even one discussion you started on abuse in the workplace, where a woman was (allegedly) assaulted, and the boss did nothing and was even in on it. When I suggested the father go in and teach them a lesson you got all puffy about violence. Now look at you here. Sickening. 20 young girls blown to smithereens and all you're doing is making excuses. Some feminist. But let's not beat around the bush here. You're making excuses because the perpetrator was non-white and Muslim. That's how f***ed up your thinking is.

The cause and effect argument backfires because Islam originally invaded Christian lands, not vie-versa.

The idea of an Islamic Caliphate goes back to the days of the Crusades.

Since then Islamic fundamentalists have always wanted/aspired to a return of a global controlling Islamic Caliphate.

Just sloganeering.

You have never argued to look at cause and effect when discussing domestic violence against women, but you use it here on this issue. No wonder the 3rd wave feminists are routinely looked on as trash.

The only thing remotely close to you using cause and effect on DV issues are that men are after power and that they are 'men'. Using this 'argument' on this issue only puts you further into the sh*t.
