Two 'sob stories', that were presented in a court of law

Q.
Should those who are guilty of criminally negligent behaviour or criminally reckless or irresponsible behaviour, face the 'due punishment', for the consequences of their behaviour,
particularly in instances where the lives of others have been damaged or destroyed [i.e. 'ended'] ?

Or should such poor personal behaviour be excused, if there are [or have been] 'extenuating' circumstances in the life of an accused ?

I have no problem with forgiveness for wrongdoing, if real remorse and contrition [for the wrongdoing] is being expressed.

But how can we know that the contrition [for the wrongdoing] is real ?

And when in these instances, the 'repentance' is being presented in a court of law,
isn't it likely that this expressed 'repentance', is simply an attempt to have a reduced sentence imposed by the court ?

Q.
If we as wrongdoers are made to bear the consequences for our wrongdoing [in punishment], won't there be a better chance of real remorse and real contrition, for our foolish or reckless behaviour ?

......sorry that she is in the predicament that she is in now!

I'll bet that Cassie has really repented!
