If you're thinking of buying a bicycle ...

... make sure that both the front and back disc brakes are made by Zoom and not by Tektro.

New braking pads for the Zoom disc brake assembly just fall into place by simple magnetic attraction, whereas the Tektro design has the pads held in place by a spring mechanism that detaches from the pads over and over again while you're trying to install it. And then when you finally succeed in getting the two pads and the spring into the correct position - you've got to shove a cotter-pin through the lot and bend one end out to hold it in place while hoping it doesn't snap off.

***

Don't buy an inner-tube compound like 'SLIME' that immediately fills any punctures and lets you keep riding with the same tyre pressure. It worked for me brilliantly over several years, but the problem always arises that the stuff eventually clogs the inner-tube valve so that the needle is stiff and won't move to allow you to test the tyre pressure or pump up the tyre.

Instead, buy something like a TIOGA Thorn Resistant PRESTA (valve) bicycle tube. It has no liquid compound in it, but the thickness of the tube is a lot more than your ordinary inner-tube.

***

Buy inner-tubes with PRESTA valves and not SCHRADER valves. With PRESTA there's a nut on the threaded central needle that allows you to tighten it up so that the tube remains the same pressure week after week instead of leaking air slowly like the SCHRADER valve does. Since using PRESTA I've had to pump back to the recommendes tyre pressure (65psi) only twice a year - something unimaginable with the SCHRADER valve that seals itself only using the tyre pressure itself.

Don't forget to buy an adaptor for the PRESTA valve so you can pump it with the SCHRADER-type pumps that are the only type on the market.

If you're thinking of buying a bicycle ...

buy a real bike that the shop assembles for you instead of that crap from Kmart that you have to put together yourself.

I've got a bike. You can ride it if you like
It's got a basket, a bell that rings and
Things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it

It's interesting you should say that.

I had my electric bike sent up to me from Victoria with it half assembled and for the rest for me to do.

It was a disgrace. Loose nuts. Things screwed in the wrong way. The back disc brake assembly put at the front, and vice versa.

I've got a cloak. It's a bit of a joke
There's a tear up the front. It's red and black
I've had it for months
If you think it could look good, then I guess it should

I know a mouse, and he hasn't got a house.
I don't know why I call him Gerald.
He's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse.

I know a room full of musical tunes.
Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork.
Let's go into the other room and make them work.

I'm not blaming the Chinese for this one. It's up to the retailers in Victoria to check the product they're selling online and make sure it comes up to Quality Assurance standards. As a one time QA man myself I would have been sacked for passing that rat's nest of loose bolts and misfittings.

Heads should roll.

Typical of me, I didn't complain, but just fixed what needed fixing and rode off into the sunset.

My biggest complaint against Chinese products is the very poor quality steel they use for making tools, screws, etc.
