http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/lifestyle/relationships/smartphone-obsession-is...

MORE Australians are ignoring their partners in favour of their smartphones in a trend experts warned could cause fights and even break up relationships.

The behaviour, which has been dubbed “pphubbing” or partner phone snubbing, already affects almost half of all relationships and causes conflict for one in every five couples, according to a recently published study.

Couples therapist Melissa Ferrari said the damaging habit had spiked in Australia “particularly over the last six months”.

Two studies show more smartphone users are ignoring their partners in favour of their screens.
“It is happening more and people are turning away from being in relationships and living more through their phones,” Ms Ferrari said.

“You potentially could lose your partner over this — it’s something to be aware of.

“If your partner is not feeling that engagement and response from you, it could deeply affect the relationship.”

The Baylor University study, which surveyed more than 450 people, found snubbing your partner to look at your phone created conflict in 22 per cent of relationships, and more than 46 per cent reported being “pphubbed” by their partner.

RELATED: How smartphones can ruin relationships

The bad behaviour included glancing at your smartphone while talking to your partner, checking your phone during lulls in conversation, and placing your smartphone where you could see it during time together.

Authors Dr James Roberts and Dr Meredith David said the study showed smartphones may “ironically impede rather than cultivate” communication in relationships and users should put their phones down while talking to loved ones.

“Developing the self-control to put away your (smartphone) in favour of meaningful, distraction-free interactions with your romantic partner will yield benefits that far outweigh that one missed call, unread email, or unchecked listing,” the study found.

it is without a doubt troubling....

.at least on a forum like this   the inevitable tinkling of phone alert doesnt interrupt  our pleasant interaction... Smiley

we are turning into rude robots.

not me of course.. I am one of the few who doesnt own a smartphone.

Nokia are re-releasing a modern version of the old 3310 mobile phone.

It has a basic camera , mp3 player, radio & the game "Snake".

Basically it can be only used for calls & text.

It's not an internet connected Smart Phone.

This all children & teenagers who are still at school need.

Smartphones should be banned from all school precincts.

Thanks for ear wigging me for the last 24 hours.

So true

Funny how it seems
Always in time, but never in line for dreams
Head over heels when toe to toe
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound

I bought a ticket to the world
But now I've come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh, I want the truth to be said

(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
I know this much is true
(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
I know this much is true

With a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue
Dissolve the nerves that have just begun
Listening to Marvin (All night long)
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound

Always slipping from my hands
Sand's a time of its own
Take your seaside arms and write the next line
Oh, I want the truth to be known

(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
I know this much is true
(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
I know this much is true

I bought a ticket to the world
But now I've come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh, I want the truth to be said

(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
I know this much is true
(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
I know this much is true

This much is true

(This much is a-true-oo)
(This much is a-true-oo-oo)

I know, I know, I know this much is true
(This much is a-true-oo)
(This much is a-true-oo-oo)

(This much is a-true-oo)
(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
(This much is a true-oo-oo)
I know this much is true
(This much is a-true-oo)
(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
(This much is a true-oo-oo)
Know this much is true
(This much is a-true-oo)
(Ha-ha-ha, ha-ah-hi)
(This much is a-true-oo-oo)
(Know this much is true)
I know, I know, I know this much is true
