See.....that is where I beg to differ.  My Old Man went to War for no reason other than he was required to.  No 'defence' about it.  He did the job he was asked to do.  So did his Uncle, and so did the Brigadier.  Not one of them had 'defence' in mind.

Nor 'freedom' nor 'democracy.'

Yes, generally the poor or unconnected get sent to war.

A war is the failure of politicians.
Send their children to war first.

A few years ago I visited a town in WA that had an old church.
In that church they had a list of all the men who had died in WW1.
There were many young men on that list.

In WW1, there would have been fewer people in the town.
On average every home would have lost at least one son.
At least.

What a disaster.
there is no winner there.

there is no glory

There is something very Irish about commemorating defeat.

You just dont get it do you?

Its not about defeat or victory.
Its about sacrifice, its about bravery, its about men and women who fought to protect YOU and YOURS from invasion.

Its about Australian soldiers who gave their lives in the protection of their families.

Regardless of your opinion of war, these men fought for what the thought was right.
They did not start the war, they did not attack civillians.

On both sides men fought and died
On both sides many young men were lost
On both sides the futility of war is demonstrated.

We celebrate their bravery, theirvsacrifice and we fervently hope that others will learn that war is HELL
