The SMH editorialises that there are worrying signs at the fringes of politics that an irrational and unscientific approach to policy is making inroads. We should put science at the centre of society it says. Will the SMH be branded an heretic organisation because of this?

The Libs are certainly trying to muzzle science and restrict it by reducing funds to it and to groups that report on science: case in point, the huge cuts to CSIRO funding and the gutting of its climate research and the cuts to the ABC leading to Catalyst science report being cut.

Newmann did the same thing in Queensland. In an age when antibiotic resistant bugs is a growing medical problem he cut laboratories working in these fields. TB is one disease making a comeback as our antibiotics are useless for dealing with the new, antibiotic strain.

The epidemic year was an outlier on every measure, with the warmest winter, the warmest spring and the heaviest early rainfall in 10 years. It had been a freak weather event, and mosquitoes benefited from it.

And JM says no, not weather AGW. Wink

The other menace occurs where drying occurs, like the southern half of Australia and parts of the US and other areas;

Wow. Droughts are new, who knew?

as the BuMet has reported, the increasing length of the bushfire season.

Yes, based on data from 1970. Ignores figures from the early 20th century. But it is best not to do comparisons; because it may interfere with your assumptions.

from your reference -

"As the incoming dean at the University of NSW, Professor Emma Johnston, said in a Herald opinion piece recently: "When the world's scientists emerge from their labs and take to the streets, there must be something very important at stake." "

Yep. Their lucrative funding. Wink

"While we are nowhere near the situation of the United States, there are worrying signs at the fringes of politics that an irrational approach to policy is making inroads. The science around climate change is a case in point. There is overwhelming scientific consensus that at least a proportion of climate change is caused by humans."

Back to the scientific consensus. Wink

But they do go on and admit it is only a proportion. They don't even say it is Catastrophic. Wink

"Thanks to science, most of humanity now has the right to expect long, healthy lives, with clean, running water and guaranteed education and literacy."

Except in poor communities where greenies are pushing up the cost of electricity.

Clearly, there is a real need to address AGW.
