Are we about to enter an Ice Age? Politicans suck!
Apr 19th, 2017 at 2:32pm

A couple of deluded and not very bright members here have posted links to 400 or so videos made by a liar-for-profit charlatan called Dubyne who says we are about to enter an ice age.

Funny old ice age!

The Arctic is rather warmer than average and sea ice extent there is at a record minimum and much of the ice is thin first year ice.

Greenland is seeing large numbers of sea level glaciers calving off icebergs, mainly from the west coast. This is happening more and more since the sea level ice shelves that surrounded much of Greenland melted away, just like the ice shelves around Antarctica are doing.

What got me to post this article here was something I read this morning:

Quote:
A vast glacier-fed river which flowed from Canada's Yukon territory across Alaska to drain into the Bering Sea has disappeared in just four days, in what scientists believe is the first observed case of "river piracy".

High average temperatures in the first three months of 2016 [WINTER months!] caused a dramatic spike in the amount of meltwater flowing from the Kaskawulsh glacier, carving a deep canyon in the ice and redirecting the flow toward the Alsek River in the south, rather than the north-flowing Slims River.

That changed the Slims River from a three-metre-deep, raging torrent to a place where "massive afternoon dust storms occurred almost daily", according to a scientific paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

No, we are nowhere near an Ice Age  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes but have to take seriously that AGW is starting to seriously change the world. It is clear CO2 is the culprit and we need to start reducing CO2 emissions. Meanwhile we need to adapt to and mitigate AGW.

Greenland ice sheet is melting, raising sea levels. At present Antarctica is reducing that sea level rise by gaining mass but it is doing so less and less and in under 30 years—in the lifetime of many here—will add to sealevel rise by adding its meltwater to that of Greenland. How far above sea level do you or your kids live?

The present shambles are acting to increase AGW, that Adani mine for example. Will give the country very little economic benefit but will see more CO2 emitted by burning that coal. The shambles have buggered up the renewable energy sector so no major reduction in emissions from there. Extensive land clearance also increases emissions.

Time for some real action by the shambles!

Only if you ignore the early evidence.

Earlier you were claiming record icebergs. What happened? Proven wrong again?

Lee tries to derail all AGW discussion. He drags in stupid, unreliable links from denier, not science, websites. He is best just ignored.

I finished my post by talking about how the Libs had sabotaged action on AGW. This belongs in PolSux. Action on AGW needs political will and political decisions and leadership (none of which we are seeing from the present shambles.)

So which part is from denier websites?

Another area the Libs have failed re AGW (and energy security) is by not ensuring sufficient gas supplies. Gas emits a lot less CO2 per unit of electricity generated.

With all the fracking that has happened in the US I doubt Trumpy can significantly increase US emissions (and is giving up a leadership position that China will grab.) Coal is not going to make a comeback.

Yeah. Too hard to fill up the tank.

When is China going to look at cutting CO2 emissions? 2030? Oh, dear.

Well, if we wait long enough, we are bound to have an ice age. But just not this century, and probably not the next one either.

Here is something else the politicians, who do suck, need to plan for. From the BuMet “State of the Climate 2016” Report:

Quote:
•      There has been an increase in
extreme fire weather, and a longer
fire season, across large parts of
Australia since the 1970s.

•      May–July rainfall has reduced by
around 19 per cent since 1970 in the
southwest of Australia.

•      There has been a decline of around
11 per cent since the mid-1990s in
the April–October growing season
rainfall in the continental southeast.

•      Rainfall has increased across parts of
northern Australia since the 1970s.

http://www.bom.gov.au/state-of-the-climate/State-of-the-Climate-2016.pdf

So the South of the continent is drying out, as well as warming, while the north is getting wetter. So what do we do, move Perth into the Kimberleys, Adelaide into Darwin and Melbourne and Sydney into Brisbane? Or could we do a Snowy Mountains type scheme on northern rivers? Redirect water south and west, creating plenty of hydro (including pumped hydro if need be) and sending water into the headwaters of the Darling River.

Another political decision to be made: quite a few coal fired generators are about to reach the end of their economic life. What do we replace them with? Gas fired generators, nuclear or renewable sources? Or a mix of the above? We really need to be planning for this now. Are our politicians doing the planning?

And it is all to do with that pesky CO2. The magic gas that can move rainfall.

And then of course we have CO2 as refrigerant. Go figure.

"Rivers changing direction is relatively common, according to the scientists, but is usually caused by tectonic forces, landslides or erosion."

Melwater carving a deep canyon in the ice sure sounds like erosion to me. Wink
