(SBS) Number of Australian 'child bride' cases doubles in a year
A growing number of Sydney girls, some as young as nine, are being taken overseas and forced to become child brides.
A government child welfare hotline has received more than 70 calls for help in the past two years.
Most of the tip-offs have come from teachers, counsellors and school principals.
Former child bride Eman Sharobeem said the practice had a profound impact on affected girls.
"It's not only the impact on the physical being of the woman, but also the psychological and social being," she said.
The practice was outlawed in Australia in 2013.
Minister for Community Services in NSW Brad Hazzard said it's unacceptable for children to be sent abroad to be married, particularly when it was so difficult fro them to seek assistance.
"I think that's the tip of the iceberg. What I'm being told by refuges where these girls have to go to is that they're getting a lot more and there's not enough places for them to go to at the moment," he said.
"This is not something we accept in 21st Century Australia."
One young woman who was able to access support was 16-year-old Alicia, not her real name, who was being pressured into a marriage by her mother.
After being stranded overseas without a passport, Alicia was able to return to Australia with assistance from the embassy.
Upon her return she was placed into a refuge with Legal Aid working to help prevent her from being removed from Australia again.
Other cases reported by teachers and social agencies included a 14-year-old self-harming because her father arranged for her to be married, and a nine-year-old being forced to marry in Pakistan.

On Friday, a 27-year old man was sentenced to 10 years jail over the case.
The court was told that the man had sex with the child daily after the wedding.
She was examined at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead shortly after he was arrested and found to be suffering an ectopic pregnancy and miscarried.
Describing the practice as “cruel and depraved’’, Justice Minister Michael Keenan has vowed to consider new laws to provide greater protection to children.
One option under consideration is changing the definition of a forced marriage to include a presumption that the child cannot consent to the marriage if they are under the age of 16.
Currently, age is not a factor in deciding whether or not a marriage is forced allowing perpetrators to argue that the children are willing participants in the marriages.
In the most recent case involving the 12-year-old girl, the defence arguing she was mature for her age and a willing participant in the marriage.

Over 700 million women currently living got married while they were just children, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) (pdf). That number is set to rise to nearly 1 billion by 2030, if current trends continue.
Child marriage, a practice that hurts young women’s health, education and long term ability to earn an income, is considered a human rights violation. Yet laws in over 116 countries allow people under the age of 18 to wed, according to a report by Pew Research.
Pew Research analyzed data from the UN and US State Department on 198 nations and territories and found that 153 require people to be legal adults aged 18, but exceptions can be made. If parental consent is given, many countries allow marriage before 18.
