Does juliar really want Malcolm to waste political capital on 18c?  No wonder coalition government spiraling downwards - the swinging voters that really matter are swinging away on irrelevance from these issues.

Do you reckon other soldiers would be insulted?

Raven has a few mates in the armed forces and asked them if they were offended when people burnt the flag. Most of them said no. Raven asked "But don't you fight for that flag?"

"No, we fight for the man next to us and for the people at home." More importantly they fight so people have the freedom to burn flags.

Not  the ex serviceman I've known, including family members. Have your mates been in combat and  had mates and relatives killed in war?

Leader of the opposition in the Senate Penny Wong has moved to suspend standing orders in a bid to push debate on the legislation to Thursday instead of Tuesday.

Do you dumb righties understand that the suggested delay was to allow the amendments which had not been distributed when the debate started to be received and understood before the debate. The Liberals were debating a bill to be accepted when the full details of the legislation had not been made available to anyone.

Hardly unreasonable. Wong even made clear that it was probable that they would support these amendments.

A typical right wing news story unfortunately not a lot of truth to it.

‘Set by rednecks’: Labor’s Penny Wong slams Government’s race-hate speech changes
Claire Bickers, wires News Corp Australia Network MARCH 28, 20175:24PM

VIDEO: AUSPOL: Prime Minister Explains Changes to Racial Discrimination Act March 21

LABOR senator Penny Wong has compared the Turnbull Government to a gang of orcs as changes to race-hate speech laws were debated in Parliament today.

Senator Wong invoked the J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series in describing changes to the Racial Discrimination Act the government says will strengthen protections for free speech and against racial vilification.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s agenda was now being “set for him by the rednecks”, she said.
“Laws are amended when they have been found to be inadequate by the courts, or when they are no longer able to meet contemporary legal demands,” Senator Wong told Parliament today.
“This government has singularly failed to demonstrate why this Act needs changing,” she said.

“Why is it that this government seems determined to subject us to a constant amateur-hour channelling of J.R.R. Tolkien, transforming this parliament into a kind of Mount Doom.
“Why is it that it seems to model itself on the grotesques who live in the land of Mordor?
“Why is it that virtually everything it touches, the Racial Discrimination Act for example, is left tarnished and spoiled as though it had been mangled by a gang of Orcs?”
Attorney-General George Brandis accused Senator Wong of playing politics when she attempted to delay debate on the bill.

Freedom of speech had been a “major issue” in public discussion for more than three years, Senator Brandis said.
He said a joint parliamentary committee that looked into freedom of speech in 2016 held nine full days of public hearings, including a hearing in every capital city in Australia before a report was tabled in November. The government consulted with Australian Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs and took up many of her suggested amendments, Senator Brandis said.
“The merits had already been extensively canvassed,” he told parliament.
Federal Labor left the door open to support changes to the way the Human Rights Commission deals with race-hate complaints in a party room meeting today.

But caucus still voted to oppose the government’s proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act from the words “offend”, “insult” and “humiliate” to “harass and intimidate”.

Caucus decided to seek further amendments to the commission’s complaints-handing process.
The Senate crossbench broadly supports changes to the process but not the word changes.
It is understood the government has further amendments, which Labor has yet to see, to the bill originally presented last week by Attorney-General George Brandis.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale said the proposed changes were about internal coalition politics and Malcolm Turnbull satisfying the right wing of his party. The Greens thought they had seen the end of the 18C debate when former prime minister Tony Abbott dropped the matter.
“This is like some bad zombie movie, it just keeps coming back and back and back,” he told parliament.

There are mixed views in the community about changes to race-hate laws. An Essential poll published on Tuesday showed 40 per cent of Australians believed existing laws were “about right”, with 26 per cent saying they are too weak and 16 per cent indicating they are too strict.
Asked about the specific wording change, 45 per cent of voters approved compared with 34 per cent against.

Now watch the Lefties furious lying and denying.

Labor’s secret plan to extend 18C complaints to gender, disability and age
Staff writers, News Corp Australia Network March 23, 2017 1:04am

LABOR is eyeing a secret plan to allow people claiming they have been offended or insulted because of their sexual orientation, gender, disability or age to pursue litigation using the same procedures that apply under section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.

Footage obtained by The Australian shows Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus last week explaining the proposal to consolidate all federal anti-discrimination laws, with the possibility of creating a “general standard” for hate speech.

Right now, separate federal laws make it unlawful to discriminate against people because of their race, age, sex and sexual orientation, disability and indigenous background.

“One of the things we’ll be looking at is this very point of whether or not we should set a standard about speech generally,” Mr Dreyfus said. “I want to have standards set in a community which respect the dignity of every Australian. I think it’s very important and something to be fought for.”

Mr Dreyfus outlined the plan during a panel discussion with Liberal backbencher Tim Wilson a week ago, hosted by the Jewish Community Council of Victoria.

Under the proposal, same-sex marriage advocates would be empowered, for example, to take legal action under 18C-style laws if they felt offended or insulted by those who publicly defended the traditional definition of marriage, The Australian reports.

Mr Dreyfus’s comments come as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act that will remove the words “offend”, “insult” and “humiliate” and replace them with the word “harass”.

The changes also add a “reasonable person” test, which would mean any discriminatory comments would have to be offensive to a reasonable person.

Amendments to the Act — if they pass the upper house — would also give the Human Rights Commission the obligation to turf out any trivial complaints before they result in drawn out legal battles.

According to The Australian, race discrimination complaint compensation has soared since 2010, with companies and governments paying almost $1 million in the last seven years to avoid going to court.

Legal experts have told News Corp the changes open the door to speech such as Holocaust denial speech or indirect vilification of a racial group.
