And the lights stay on...

The Resources Minister, who is also the Minister for Northern Australia and oversees the infrastructure fund, rejected suggestions that the help for a coal-fired power station would be a “subsidy” that meddled with the market.

“I wouldn’t characterise it as a subsidy, it’s an investment. Governments for decades have invested in energy infrastructure; all the energy infrastructure in Queensland is owned by the state government,’’ Senator Canavan said.

“It’s not unusual and generally those investments have paid off very well. I think most Australians see the central role of government as being investing in infrastructure — roads, rail and energy.”

Senator Canavan said the investment would be comparable to Mr Turnbull’s decision 10 days ago to offer government support for a $2bn expansion of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.

The energy security committee of cabinet is waiting on a report into the electricity market from Chief Scientist Alan Finkel before deciding any changes to the sector, with energy security expected to gain a priority so that baseload power generators — including coal-fired ones — are assured a long-term return.

Senator Canavan is talking to Japanese companies that believe they could transfer their “high efficiency, low emissions” technology to the northern Queensland project.

Mr Butler is warning against the use of taxpayer funds for the rail line to the Adani mine or a new power station, claiming the long-term future for coal is one of decline.

“This is something the coal industry needs to deal with. We’ve said as a federal Labor Party we will not support taxpayers’ money going in to support infrastructure or pay for infrastructure around this (Adani) mine,” he said last week.

A few COMMENTS to send the Lefties into orbit

While we have legislation that requires 23.5 % of electricity be supplied by "renewables" by 2020, and wind/solar receive 9 cent/KWh subsidies in addition to the wholesale price of about 5 cents/KWh paid for by higher electricity prices, more coal stations will be shutting down. Yet when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing, we need base load supplies. But running coal-fired generators on an intermittent basis is uneconomic. The RET is slowly but surely destroying Australia as a place for competitive manufacturing industry - so along with the coal exports go jobs. Where is the ACTU?

SimonTigey 2 hours ago
This sounds great, but its all talk. I will applaud once I see the power station up and running. We here in SA badly need a new coal fired power station, we should be first priority!

Frank 40 minutes ago
@SimonTigey How do you propose to get a new coal fired power station past the approvals process? Your totalitarian government will make sure that never happens.

graham 7 minutes ago
No way Jose, get rid of your toxic government first.

Michael 2 hours ago
It would appear that MT has finally gripped the obvious - Australia needs coal fired base load electricity.
Now he needs to convert his conversion to reality.  Go to tender and get on with building this very necessary project.

graham 23 minutes ago
@Michael Remember the local banks who have been bullied into an anti coal stance won't finance a power station, so it will have to be financed and owned by willing outsiders, apparently the Chinese.

Terence 2 hours ago
Why build a North Qld coal plant over 1,000 miles from main users with massive transmission losses? Optimistically it will cost $2-3 billion plus, certainly if the CFMEU is involved, and won't be online for FIVE years. Talk about politicians ability to mismanage anything, Australia needs the energy now.
As  Hazelwood's power station closes this week, it has been generating 1,400 MW for the last month, not bad for a 53 year old plant, which BTW is more than ALL Australia's wind farms combined generated over the same period.
What is planned to replace Hazelwood's power now? As nothing new is on the table let's hope the wind keeps blowing. MT's thought bubbles are FIVE years away.
We must now prepare for unavoidable and totally unnecessary blackouts.

PR 1 hour ago
@Terence You can't build coal fired power in Vic, Labor won't let you. Industry will have the lotion of moving to QLD,which is better than closing totally

Paul 2 hours ago
Good to see Australia actually use and benefit from one of our biggest exports (coal does have a future!).  At least a part of Qld will have energy security.  If Govt needs to invest in this, great do it.  However, we also have to remove those disincentives for Industry to invest in coal.

Please, politicians, read Jo Nova's award-winning scientific Australian blog.

Shaun 7 hours ago
If not coal then its nuclear or gas. Make your mind up Labor ( I saw Labor as we need them on side) as Wind and Solar are no go just unsuitable for base load so make the choice now and fast. The first 2GW power station needs to be under construction this year or big trouble. It takes 3 years for gas or 5 years for coal and more for nukes so make the choice now.

Yes, Labor will win the next election in an unprecedented wipeout. We know from the 1998 and 2013 elections a huge preponderance of seats almost guarantees a win in the next election John useless Howard only got 48.5% of the vote in 1998 yet managed to hang on.

So Labor is assured of winning in 2022 as well.

Is going to be hard to fix the complete pigs breakfast the Libs have made of everything!

Australian Power Project PM MUSN'T FORGET NORTH QUEENSLAND'S ENERGY CRISIS STILL NEEDS FIXING
News & Current Affairs Thursday 16 March, 2017

The Prime Minister’s $2 billion pledge today to boost the electricity supply coming out of NSW’s Snowy Mountains Scheme is a timely reminder to the people of North Queensland that they have a fight on their hands to secure Federal support for a clean coal power station.

The Federal Government will today unveil plans to build a “Snowy 2.0” to power the equivalent of 500,000 homes and meet electricity demand in NSW and Victoria. The project is expected to drive down electricity costs in NSW and Victoria.

The expansion of the Snowy Hydro System is more than double the size of the 800MW clean coal power station proposed by Townsville Enterprise which has been estimated by GHD to cost $1.778 billion.

CEO of The Australian Power Project Nathan Vass said it’s clear that the battle to win the support of the Prime Minister for a power station in North Queensland is far from over.

“North Queensland desperately needs a clean coal power station to bring stability to wholesale electricity prices which have increased by 168% during the five years to 2017.

“It’s simply not possible for North Queensland businesses to compete with Brisbane based manufacturing companies, let alone those in NSW and Victoria, where wholesale electricity prices are substantially lower.

“In a country like Australia, it’s unacceptable that North Queensland has to pay the additional costs of generating electricity more than 1,300km away in south east and central Queensland.

“North Queensland must today make clear to the Prime Minister that they urgently need a clean coal power station built in the region.

“Countries like Japan, South Korea, America and China are all powering their manufacturing sectors using ultra-super critical power stations, which deliver affordable, reliable power with emissions 30% lower than those typically generated in Australia.

“A report by GHD on the benefits of a Townsville based clean coal power station are compelling. $836 million in local economic benefits and a boost to national income of $2.2 billion.

“North Queenslanders should visit http://www.australianpowerproject.com.au/townsville-petition/ and sign the petition for a locally based clean coal power station.

“It’s clear from the Prime Minister’s announcement today that other parts of Australia are fighting hard for not just his ear, but also his wallet. North Queensland must deliver to the PM the message that while they support him taking action to address power prices in NSW and Victoria, they must not be forgotten,” Nathan Vass said.

Much to the Greenies and their Labor puppets horror the real govt is fair dinkum about fixing Australia's real base load energy.

Clean coal is our goal with a sprinkling of hydro where available.

Resources Minister Matt Canavan opens $5 billion infrastructure fund for clean-coal power stations

Resources Minister Matt Canavan has opened the $5 billion Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund to fund new so-called clean-coal power stations.

Key points:
The Federal Government has invested close to $590 million in clean-coal technology since 2009
Australia does not have a high-efficiency, low-emission power station
Prime Minister Turnbull announced the push for more clean-coal technology earlier this week

Senator Canavan's comments come days after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Australian industry had an obligation to be at the forefront of coal technology.

Treasurer Scott Morrison has also not ruled out using money set aside in the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to pay for new generation power stations.

Mr Canavan said he had received interest from energy generators to tap into the billion-dollar investment fund and explore North Queensland.

"I've received some interest over the past week associated with our commitment to build base load power stations, including to support clean coal options," he told ABC AM.

Mr Canavan would not say which companies had expressed interest but said there were viable options near the Galilee Basin and other parts of the state's north.

The Federal Government has invested close to $590 million in clean-coal technology since 2009 but Australia does not have a high-efficiency, low-emission power station.

The Resources Minister cited a 2012 report by industry consultants GHD, which indicated clean-coal power stations could be commercially viable in Australia's north.

"Some people might not realise that in North Queensland there is no base-load power station north of Rockhampton and industrial consumers in north Queensland pay often up to double the prices in southern Queensland," he said.
Why emissions reductions from 'clean coal' remain a pipe dream

There have been massive efforts to attain the holy grail of "clean coal", but the current reality is that it remains a dirty way to produce energy, writes Stephen Long.

"There is certainly and option there and a market there for supply."

Mr Turnbull announced the push for more clean-coal technology earlier this week, which he vowed to make electricity prices and energy security a defining political debate of the year.

But energy experts have also warned power prices for consumers could double, not fall, if new coal power stations are built.

Mr Canavan dismissed comments by some Australia's energy generators — including AGL and Energy Australia — saying new power stations would be expensive to build and require significant public funds.

"With all respect to those very eminent companies, we wouldn't take advice from Coles or Woolworths on whether we should allow Costco for example to come into the Australian market," Mr Canavan said.

"I am not surprised that existing generators don't want another large-scale base load power station to come into the market, part in an area like North Queensland where they are clearly making good money selling electricity at very high prices.

"Good luck to them and good luck to them in the market."

Bloomberg New Energy finance researcher Leonard Quong said new coal would be the most expensive form of energy supply.

"New coal is made particularly expensive due to the substantial carbon, reputation, trading and construction risks the technology presents to an investor," he said.

The renewed focus on clean-coal has drawn criticism from Labor and the Greens, who have accused the Government of trying to protect "the coal club".

Opposition spokesman for climate change and energy Mark Butler said a preference for coal over renewables would mean higher power bills for Australians.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale said the cleanest form of electricity would remain wind and solar, while raising concerns about the cost of new base-load coal plants.

Yes, it is. That doesn't mean opinion polls are irrelevant. The current batch of dire opinion polls for the government will prevent Turnbull from calling an early House-only election to get a more workable majority. There is precedent for this - Menzies 1963.
