Having read Sarah Hall's How TO Paint A Deadman, I assumed this later offering to be at least as good. It's not. The characters are quite well drawn, but they are all dull as ditch water. I gave up after about 150 pages of 430. I don't waste my reading time on books about nothing. The only thing that happens in what I read, was that the main protagonist got herself knocked up at a New Years Eve party. Thankfully, she blamed herself, but she did not go into that female alter-ego that is always whispering in their ears, "Have a baby, go on, you know you want one," even when they tell their male partner that they don't. But that kind of introspection would have made the character a whole lot more interesting than what Sarah was prepared to reveal. After all, it is these kinds of pregnancies that keep the human race going; certainly not planned parenthood.
