Antarctic sea ice record low and still falling
Mar 20th, 2017 at 12:52pm

It's at a record low and the area of ice is still decreasing at a time it should have started to increase.

There was a huge drop in 2015.

...

...

http://gizmodo.com/antarctic-sea-ice-crashed-this-year-and-scientists-dont-17929...

Quote:
Just about every month, it seems, we get a report on the dismal state of Arctic sea ice. By contrast, the shiny white stuff surrounding the Antarctic continent has been remarkably stable in a warming world. This year, however, the sea ice at our planet’s south pole is crashing, and scientists don’t know why.

It’s late summer in Antarctica, the time when sea ice always hits its annual minimum. This year, that minimum marks a dramatic new record—the smallest sea ice extent since continuous satellite coverage began in 1979, by a long shot. Sea ice reached an estimated 2.188 million square kilometers on March 1st, according to near real-time data provided by the National Snow and Ice Data Center. The previous record low, of 2.296 million square kilometers, was set on February 28th, 1997. The difference, of 0.12 million square kilometers, encompasses an area larger than the state of Maine.

Yes. We know nothing existed before 1979. Wink

Can you explain how Mawson sailed into Commonwealth Bay where Turney and the Ship of Fools got stuck?

Yes, the Antarctic sea ice and NZ glaciers did increase until about 2013. This was well known from satellite photos etc.

GW was supposed to be occurring long before 2013 when that expedition got stuck in Antarctica.

There was a period of unusual cooling in NZ & Antarctica, 2008–13 from memory. That led to a huge build up of Antarctic ice. NZ glaciers were advancing in that time. Little while again the liar Booby thinks is god said glaciers in NZ were advancing. He was five years too late: this is typical of the careless, slapdash way Dubyne compiles his videos with no real research, no fact checking etc. Why Booby believes the liar is anybody’s guess.

But now there is a record minimum of sea ice there.

What something like the time when a US submarine surfaced at the magnetic Nth Pole  & there was very little ice there?

Seems it is not just Antarctic sea ice that is shrinking, land ice is too and can be expected to melt faster once the ozone hole closes more:

Key finding 1:

Quote:
Antarctica is warming,
although changes in
atmospheric circulation
brought about by the
Antarctic ozone hole have
been a temporary mitigating
factor that has reduced the
overall amount of warming,
primarily in summer

Explanatory text:
Quote:
During the past half-century, western Antarctic surface temperatures have shown general warming trends, with significant regional patterns. Cooling of the lower stratosphere because of ozone depletion in spring and early summer has helped to mitigate the amount of warming during the past 20–30 years, particularly during
the summer across East Antarctica. For the remainder of the century, the effects of global climate change because of increased greenhouse gas concentrations are likely to overcome the mitigating effects of ozone depletion as the ozone layer recovers.

So Western Antarctica is warming while East Antarctica has been protected to some degree from warming but as the ozone hole is reduced it too will be warming.

Key Finding 2
Quote:
In contrast to the West
Antarctic Ice Sheet, the East
Antarctic Ice Sheet is not
losing mass overall but may
be gaining mass. In some
places at the coastal
margins, the ice sheet is
showing variability in
response to changes in
ocean heat. Antarctic glacier
discharge shows high
variability, while glacier
retreat continues on Heard
Island

Explanatory text:
Quote:
Although the Antarctic ice sheet is losing mass overall, this is occurring in West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula. Various studies show that East Antarctica, as a whole, is close to neutral or possibly gaining mass. This aggregate conceals regional patterns of ice gain and loss in East Antarctica. In particular, coastal ice discharge from the Totten Glacier shows high variability that is related to changes in ocean heat. Recent research shows that the Totten Glacier drains a large region that rests on bedrock below sea level. This makes the ice sheet potentially vulnerable to ice retreat and ice losses, as is currently seen in parts of West Antarctica. Glacier retreat continues to be observed on Heard Island.

Well, this is different to what I have read before: the Antarctic ice sheet is losing mass overall even if East Antarctica is neutral to gaining mass.

The warmer seas, especially in the southern hemisphere (BuMet State of the Climate Report) will continue melting ice shelves to reach the land based glaciers which will them melt faster. On Greenland this resulted in 6 times faster melt.

The Southern Ocean is changing in ways that are
likely to affect regional and global climate, and marine
productivity (Rhein et al. 2013). Ocean temperatures
around the Antarctic continent have increased more
rapidly and to greater depth than the global average in
recent decades
(Roemmich et al. 2015). This warming has
been linked to glacier retreat and ice-shelf disintegration
in West Antarctica (Miles et al. 2013), and indications of
increased basal melt of the Antarctic ice sheet (Schodlok
et al. 2016). The extent of sea ice around Antarctica has
shown a small overall annual increase in recent decades,
particularly in the Ross and Weddell seas, which is linked
to climate variability in the Pacific Ocean (Meehl et al.
2016). There have been, however, significant regional
decreases in the Amundsen and the Bellingshausen seas
(Hobbs et al. 2016a).

One cause is possibly known. Are you saying there are no other possible causes?

Wasn't there a story of how the hole was shrinking and then suddenly it was the largest in some time?

"In Oct. 2, 2015, the ozone hole expanded to its peak of 28.2 million square kilometers (10.9 million square miles), an area larger than the continent of North America. Throughout October, the hole remained large and set many area daily records. Unusually cold temperature and weak dynamics in the Antarctic stratosphere this year resulted in this larger ozone hole. In comparison, last year the ozone hole peaked at 24.1 million square kilometers (9.3 million square miles) on Sept. 11, 2014. Compared to the 1991-2014 period, the 2015 ozone hole average area was the fourth largest."

Air pressure how?

You do know how snow (and hail) are formed? Wiki will explain it to you.

2016 was apparently just below average size? Doesn't sound much like shrinking.

“This year we saw an ozone hole that was just below average size,”

https://www.nasa.gov/feature/Goddard/2016/antarctic-ozone-hole-attains-moderate-...

Seems like a lot of variability.

Jovial Monk wrote on Mar 21st, 2017 at 9:41pm:

On Greenland this resulted in 6 times faster melt.

https://soe.environment.gov.au/sites/g/files/net806/f/soe2016-antarctic-launch14...

Are you fair dinkum?

The Ozone hole closes so the ice will melt faster?

When the so called weather scientists started talking about detrimental affects of increased carbon dioxide and other atmospheric pollutants the predicted outcome was that .....

the hole in the ozone was getting bigger and that's what was warming up the planet.

Your hypothesis/statement is the exact opposite of what the weather doomsayers were espousing about the hole in the ozone.

Is it any wonder that people are skeptical about the agenda of all the so called AGW scientists/experts.

There are a total of 37 active and extinct volcanoes in Antarctica.

Mt Erubus last erupted in 2015.

There are even undersea volcanoes erupting under the Arctic.

Are the effects of volcanoes now also the fault of man in the AGW hypothesis?

So?

They're having no affect on the ice melt situation?

Says the same bloke that says that contrary to original Ozone hole theory ....

that it was getting bigger and bigger and warming the planet.

It's actually shrinking yet it's still warming the planet. Grin

Not only sea ice is melting: Antarctica is losing land ice as well.

The ozone hole is actually protecting parts of Antarctica from warming.

That's believable if it's shrinking .... because that's the opposite affect it should have to expanding & growing larger.

But that's not what you intimated.

So why wouldn't volcanoes have anything to do with changes to climate or AGW?

The earth has a molten core .... volcanoes have been affecting weather since the planet first came into existence.

A massive eruption from a single volcano can affect weather & climate patterns for years.

Volcanoes have existed since the earth was formed.

Exactly!

They were there when the Arctic ice was metres thick. They are there now the ice is thin, mostly one year ice and shrunken in extent.

Volcanoes under the sea (Iceland is a case where the ocean floor and mid ocean ridge is on land) are mainly in mid ocean ridges where ocean floor is created (it is destroyed in subduction under continental plates causing earthquakes.)

Here is a diagram showing the mid ocean ridges including one near Antarctica and one under the Arctic ocean:
...

Greenhouse gases like CO2 and CH4 are warming the world and the mechanism by which they do are well known and measured by terrestrial and satellite spectrometry. There is no real reason (ignorance, supporting a past decision to deny AGW etc are the most likely) to doubt any of that.

That is why bushfire seasons are longer all over the world and bush/wildfires raze big parts of Australia, Chile, the US and the USSR. Melting of landbased glaciers and icesheets and an increase in volume of the warming seas are causing increased sea levels. These too have been measured by tidal gauges and satellite based altimetry.

Not bothering to post the rubbish in PA anymore, Booby?

Dear me, climate scientists are an ignorant lot aren’t they? According to silly deniers like you and Lees et al climate scientists don’t know about the sun(!) don’t know about the Precession of the Equinoxes and now, apparently, they don’t know about cloud circulation! Bloody unlikely all that, isn’t it? And Dubyne is down to the last refuge of a denier, volcanoes  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy See the posts from earlier today in this thread.

Antarctica, according to the BuMet reports is losing ice overall tho East Antarctica is neutral or gaining mass but not enough to offset losses elsewhere. Sea ice is at a record low extent at both poles.

So the latest video smells as putrid as all the others. Bad science, pseudoscience by those who no doubt have an agenda.

BTW Booby, you still think Tassie cherry growers are enclosing their trees in glasshouses?

This planet was vastly different in all demographics way back then.

Where there are now deserts there was primordial rain forest/jungles.

How active were the subterranean volcanoes under the Arctic or Antarctic? ....

as there were many many more above ground back then, even on this continent.

This continents ecosystem was also shaped by fire .... used by our Indigenous peoples ...... much of our native trees are conditioned to fire .........

adapted so that it requires fire over seeds in the ground to get them to germinate.

Yes, there are warm currents reaching the Antarctic continent from the Pacific mainly. These currents are melting the ice shelves and when they are gone landbased glaciers will melt more rapidly. Six times more rapidly than before going by Greenland.

yes. Now describe how they extrapolated the data from outside the Antarctic Circle to inside the Antarctic Circle. You seem to be saying it doesn't matter how much cooler the waters are, there will be no mixing.

Where is the Antarctic data needed prove this assertion?

Nope. You said they had to be warmer. My error.

You are the one quoted Roemmich et al. 2015. It doesn't provide any data for the Antarctic as the buoys are outside the Antarctic. Therefore there has to be extrapolation to get Antarctic data. No Antarctic data - no proof of anything.

The “underwater volcanoes” is Dubyne throwing in the towel and admitting AGW is happening. Since AGW is actually happening, despite the quiescent sun in the last few decades, that is a sensible thing to do.

Booby, even JoNova has agreed GHGs have warmed the world. She is reduced to trying to maintain that more CO2 won’t cause more warming. Not a tenable position but the BEST deniers can put up nowadays.

If you REALLY want to know I suggest you contact the BuMet and the CSIRO.

With the Pacific heating up you expect no impact in Antarctica? That would be a weird position to take up.

So you don't trust the observations? That's empirical science, except where there is data manipulation. Wink

I quoted the BuMet report. I trust that and they do have teams out there and there are satellite observations too.

You have a quibble take it up with them. I know what is in the report.

There were expeditions that were ocean based. You derided one such but I guess it found data. You don’t think the report is supposition, you are just trying to convince yourself there is no AGW. Why not join Booby in his delusions about a little ice age? Comes with videos.

A small oops.

"CSIRO Facilities Program Director of the Marine National Facility, Mr Ben Rae, said each year scientists from across Australia, and their international collaborators, competed to be selected for research voyages on board Investigator.

"The ship is a purpose-built high-tech floating laboratory, and the scientists and students on board will be studying everything from fossilised phytoplankton to the chemical fingerprint of ancient sediment samples," Mr Rae said.

"At almost two months at sea, it will be one the longest voyages Investigator has undertaken and its first Antarctic specific mission."

The Antarctic research voyage will depart from Hobart on Saturday, 14 January and is scheduled to return Sunday, 5 March."

You realise analysing Argo data doesn't need a physical presence? The data is uploaded electronically.

You're right.

But -

Jovial Monk wrote on Mar 21st, 2017 at 10:41pm:
Ocean temperatures
around the Antarctic continent have increased more
rapidly and to greater depth than the global average in
recent decades (Roemmich et al. 2015).

And as I noted -

lee wrote on Mar 22nd, 2017 at 11:10am:
"Increasing heat content of the global ocean dominates the energy imbalance in the climate system(1). Here we show that ocean heat gain over the 0-2,000 m layer continued at a rate of 0.4-0.6 W m(-2) during 2006-2013. The depth dependence and spatial structure of temperature changes are described on the basis of the Argo Program's(2) accurate and spatially homogeneous data set, through comparison of three Argo-only analyses. "

http://scrippsscholars.ucsd.edu/droemmich/content/unabated-planetary-warming-and...

So the reference to Roemmich et al. 2015 is based on Argo data. The Argo buoys that are not in the Antarctic.

The Antarctic is not mentioned there.

Why don’t you read what is written not what you would like to see written?

But the summation you gave directly quotes the Antarctic in Roemmich et al. 2015. The paper I quoted is Roemmich et al. 2015.

http://scrippsscholars.ucsd.edu/droemmich/publications/keyword/589

It is the only paper attributed to Roemmich in 2015. Now it is not my fault if the reference you provided is erroneous. Perhaps you could get your source to check their reference.

That is what is in front of me. You do understand what you quoted?

Roemmich et al was only published in Nature, it is not published elsewhere, where I can get passed the abstract.

I did find this -

https://www.mpimet.mpg.de/fileadmin/atmosphaere/WCRP_Grand_Challenge_Workshop/Ri...

- which uses Roemmich et al 2015. According to the graphics it only goes to 60ºS. Looks like the article you quoted with approval got all excited over nothing. Wink
