If I was going to go on an arduous and exhausting trek I would want it to mean something more than just climbing a mountain slope that had no historic value.

What I would do - (after re-reading the book "Kokoda" by Paul Ham) - is to put myself in for the slog of following the Owen Stanley Mountains trail where Australians went to meet up with the Japs coming the other way.

That would have real meaning for me.

I've got photos my sister in law took when she was there and the villages nearby  ... whilst the mountain ranges look great from afar, the scenery looks pretty bleak up close. Just dirt and rocks, not a blade of grass or a tree to be seen anywhere.

At least not in any of the photos she took .

I've been to some very high points of the Indian Himaylaysand I know what you mean, it's more about zooming out for the scale.

The worse thing was she was staying in the complex where I live. Cheesy Cheesy

Why would they be crapping in my park if there was a dunny nearby?

The Chinese don't regard human manure in the same way as we do. For them it fertilizes their vegetable fields, and of course, their public dunnies are a rich source of Toilet Insects which they pack onto kebab sticks and lightly saute to sell at their outdoor evening markets. The cockroaches with dung beetles kebabs dipped in black bean sauce are to die for. Nice and crunchy.

You lived in China right? I've never been but some of the stories are nearly as confronting as India. Yuck!

Here's one from the Indian Himalayas. Dusty and desolate but I love the scale.
