Because the world has changed now, and we need innovative solutions to deal with the problems of the future. It takes a year to wipe your butt in politics. We live in a democracy, not a dictatorship; there's a reason why things take a long time; and why they should take a LONG time, because we don't want to rush anything.

none of which changes the answer.

The world is always changing. I agree we need modernise our system, but nothing that will simply give the corrupt politicians even more power, instead we have to take the power away from them. Move to a Direct Democracy  model. Once that is in place the length of term is obsolete.

You can't run the country on DD. People aren't always fully aware of the facts and details. Can you imagine having a plebiscite on overhauling the healthcare system?

Twelfth most prosperous nation that does so by riding on the backs of the unemployed, the under-employed, and by increasing poverty while raising costs of living for the many and not even managing to retain profits and taxation from its own narrowing field of products, thus creating a false image of prosperity, since while the actual amount being generated is there - it either goes to a small group at the top who 'disappear' it in creative accounting or vanish it offshore to foreign 'investors' and their purported debts.

Twelfth most prosperous, my arse.

Go live in America, then, if you think Australia is so bad. Oh, wait, what's that? Australia is ranked 2nd on the United Nations Human Development Index and has been for several years.

Yes - we innovate by shutting and locking the gates both ways - in and out - and by looking after our own first.  You offshore jobs and such - you pay an exit tax - you wish to invest here, you put up a surety, pay a guaranteed amount of tax, employ Australians first and foremost, and have at least a 75% Australian investment in any project, and then when you pack up and vanish offshore again, you pay a guaranteed amount of tax based on your turnover, and you can then claim that as a business expense in your tax haven.

I'd say that was pretty innovative and deals with the current world problem of 'globalisation', and at this time I'm certain many governments would follow the same path, if just given the proper advice.

Such a scenario would mark a major change in direction for government here.
