The truth is that no one really knows how many polar bears are out there. Although the fact that they are no longer hunted by humans as much as they were in the past has obviously helped their numbers.

That is what I found from a quick google, the ban on hunting and the uncertainty of the population estimate.

Their numbers have no relation to AGW, of course. Be interesting to find how they adapted, hunting on land rather than icefloes or whatever. We do know the sea ice extent in the Arctic is decreasing. If the census was more accurate we could see how the various subpopulations are faring.

There was a recent documentary series on SBS "Wild Canada". This showed actually footage of polar bears catching trout in one of the northern rivers. They are intelligent and resourceful animals
