Carrington Event

Look it up.

Will we get another in the 2020s. It could knock out power grids for 2 years, disrupt food & water supplies, destroy satellites.

There's always something. But we'll get the hang of it.

The ice core studies don't show events in the order of the 1859 event.although they would be expected to. Maybe it's because the polar regions don't experience the same intensity.
Maybe Chinese history records indicative aurora experiences though because they happen in unusual latitudes.

The 1859 event is the first that happened at a time when their was sufficient industrialisation  for it to be noticeable, like telegraphic communication going down and operators getting shocks.
The Quebec event not so long ago was much smaller but still caused chaos.

The problem for modern power grids in a major event is apparently the capacity to manufacture replacement transformers is limited in the short term.

It is ironic that our increased reliance on technology actually makes us more vulnerable to these types of events.

As long as it doesn't happen within the next 40 years I'll be happy

Well it probably won't happen, but then you might instead get an event like "The Year without a Summer" which happened in Europe about 1817 as the result of the explosion of a Javanese (?) volcano.
I started a thread on that one too. I find these unusual events fascinating.

America, despite it's claims to be technologically advanced is actually quite backward in how it's infrastructure is organised and designed.  Do not assume that what effects the US will affect the rest of the world, today, in the same way.   The US power grid is quite antiquated, as profit is the driving motive, with the result that if another Solar storm occurs, it is likely to go down in a big way.   Until recently, Australia's power grid was controlled by Governments and despite how that control is portrayed, it invariably meant that the system was robust and well maintained.  Recent events are now showing that because of decreased maintenance and decreased spending on power infrastructure, we are becoming vulnerable.   Roll Eyes

Yup. The reason for the SA statewide shut down was the privatised network. Corners were cut everywhere to make more money for the absentee owner of the network.

The more recent shutdown of part of Adelaide: the Pelican Is gas powered generator didn’t fire up because it would not bring in enough profit.

Nationalise the bloody lot!

I think we're talking about exceptional forces here which don't bother with who owns the grids or satellites or airplanes.
